“Poor Boy”: When Jean-Luc Godard insulted Tarantino

Although Jean-Luc Godard died yesterday at the age of 91, I looked back at an interview he gave to France Inter in 2014 in which he painted no less than Quentin Tarantino.

Jean-Luc Godard, best known for his “Breathe or Disgust” signature, died yesterday at the age of 91. Known as a co-founder of the New Wave, he is also remembered for his strong – and not always very gentle – opinions on his fellow directors.

Thus, in May 2014, when he was preparing to present his film Adieu au Langage at the Cannes Film Festival, he had the opportunity to talk about Quentin Tarantino. France Interpainted an unattractive portrait of a man who still showed admiration for him even with the name of his production house: Except the bandOn Godard’s film, Bande Ă  Part.

“He didn’t pay anything”He began by lamenting this tribute to the Franco-Swiss filmmaker, before declaring that he was not interested in Tarantino. “absolutely not”.

“He is, as they used to say in the 18th century, a joker. Poor boy.”he added. “But so much the better if he’s happy. They used to be the kind of people we hated. But no more. We let them go.”

The words are a little evasive, but eloquent enough to see that the director of Contempt didn’t hold Pulp Fiction in too high esteem.

Quentin Tarantino, who was questioned on this topic, nevertheless showed incredulity towards Godard’s attacks:

“Well I can’t believe he said that”He said at a press conference in Cannes. “So if you don’t prove it to me or tell me to my face, I’m going to think you’re overrated!”
