House of the Dragon: Is it problematic to ‘ship’ Rhaenyra and Daemon? Showrunner responds

Love relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon is developed since the first episode of House of the Dragon

One of the most developed novels of House of the Dragon it’s between Rhaenira (Emma D’Arcy in the adult version) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) – and this has been happening since the first episode. However, as they are niece and uncle, respectively, there are several divisions between approving or not this romantic relationship.

At one point in the series, Rhaenira and daemon they even kiss, but the protagonist’s uncle doesn’t invest in anything else and abandons her. During an interview with Variety, Ryan Condalshowrunner of the spin-off of game of Thronesresponded to fans who support a loving relationship between the two characters.

“I mean, nothing surprises me these days. I really didn’t know what people were going to do with it,” said the executive. “Look, [o relacionamento entre Rhaenyra e Daemon] It’s part of the story, and that’s what makes it fascinating, because it’s taboo in a way and in our modern sensibility.”

“It’s even a taboo when it comes to the universe game of Thronesmaybe not for – well, I think even so for the Targaryensbecause they are different generations,” continued Ryan Condal. “But yeah, it’s amazing what great acting can do for people to accept things about a character.”

That is, according to the showrunner, the great performances of Milly Alcock (young performer Rhaenira), Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith bring a certain credibility to the characters’ questionable actions. Furthermore, Condal also compared it with a scene from the Back to the future (1985), in which Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) kisses the teenage version of the mother.

But look, I mean I went back to Back to the future. marty goes to the dance with his mom, and you’re kind of scared about it, but you’re also like, ‘Oh! They are two beautiful people. Are they going to make out tonight?!’

Then, Ryan Condal explained how the public House of the Dragon approve of love relationship Rhaenira and daemon because they are not related to anyone in the audience: “People are fine with that, or game of Thrones did enough to normalize the mating rituals of the Targaryen that we don’t have to worry about it.”

Which daemon do with the young Rhaenira it is, in modern terminology, an act of ab***. And, like a traumatic event, it shapes who Rhaenira becomes.
