The Last of Us: Music from the 3rd episode explains the mystery of the series

Released in the 1980s, the track solved a riddle about Bill and Frank left by the first episode of the plot; understand

Long, Long Time“, the third episode of The Last of Usdebuted on HBO last Sunday, the 29th, telling the love story between bill and Frank. Exciting, the chapter not only impacted fans, but also solved a curious mystery.

As punctuated by Mashable, the enigma starts right in the first episode of the series, when Ellie (Bella Ramsey) finds a radio and a long list of songs in Joel (Pedro Pascal). In the list of tracks, she finds an unusual code, which suggests a parallel between some decades and possible messages.

On the list, songs from the 1960s indicate that there is “nothing new”, songs from the 1970s indicate “new stock”, and releases from the 1980s have a large “X”. the apartment, Joel begins to be questioned by Ellie.

“So who are bill and Frank? The radio is a smuggling code, right?”, the young woman theorizes. “Music from the 60s [significam que] we have nothing new, 70’s [indicam que] they have new stuff… what’s from the 80’s?”

Then when trying to troubleshoot the code and answer the question itself, Ellie play a part in Joel, stating that a specific song played on the radio while he was sleeping. It was “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go“, released by wham! in 1984.

Caught by surprise, Joel demonstrates frustration with the music and, thus, Ellie determines: “Gotcha. 80’s music means trouble. Broken code.” But, after all, what would have been the problem indicated by the reproduction of the track from the 1980s?

It is only in the third episode that we discover the answer to the mystery, as we know the story of bill and Frank. In the chapter, while exploring the basement of bill, Joel and Ellie find a radio playing a track from the 1980s and, before the man cuts off the transmission, Ellie asks why she was ringing.

“If you don’t reset the countdown every few weeks, this playlist plays on the radio,” replies Joel, putting an end to the mystery. It turns out that, contrary to what Ellie imagined when deceiving Joel with the music of wham!songs from the 1980s do not indicate a problem, but rather that something has happened to bill and Frankpreventing them from resetting the radio’s timer.

Interestingly, it is the code itself that tells us, even in the first episode, that bill and Frank were probably already dead weeks before Joel, Tess and Ellie leave Boston. That’s because, at the end of the chapter, the radio wistfully plays “Never Let Me Down Again“, of Depeche Mode — a song released in 1987.
