Will.i.am Says AI Can Restore Human Authenticity in Music

Musician Will.i.am has argued that artificial intelligence offers an opportunity to restore what is most genuine in music, speaking in an exclusive interview with CNN Brasil.

The 51-year-old artist insisted that the current crisis of creativity and authenticity across the music industry is not a recent phenomenon, nor can it be blamed on emerging technology.

According to Will.i.am, the music industry was already losing its essential character long before artificial intelligence tools entered the market. He argued that commercial decisions driven by digital streaming metrics had already eroded traditional songwriting standards.

Will.i.am, born William Adams, built an international reputation as a rapper, producer, and founding member of the hip hop group Black Eyed Peas. Beyond his music career, he has long operated as a technology entrepreneur and investor, serving in innovation roles at tech firms and founding consumer hardware ventures.

Algorithms and streaming metrics

In his interview, the singer pointed to the industry prioritization of curated playlists and track skip rates as the primary drivers of creative decline. He explained that focusing on short term listener retention at the expense of orchestration and narrative song structure had emptied the art of composition.

Will.i.am stated that the art of making full albums was lost before the arrival of artificial intelligence. He emphasized that AI tools were not responsible for that initial decay in how albums were conceived and produced.

In modern music streaming, digital platforms track listener interactions to determine algorithmic recommendations. Metrics such as skip rates measure how quickly a user skips a track, leading many commercial songwriters to shorten song intros and place main choruses earlier to keep listeners engaged.

CNN Brasil, a major news broadcaster headquartered in Sao Paulo, conducted the interview. Digital playlists curated by streaming platforms have increasingly dictated commercial music success in recent years, placing immense pressure on artists to design songs for immediate digital engagement.

The artist explained that this relentless focus on digital listener habits caused the industry to abandon deeper artistic ambition. Comparing contemporary chart topping musicians to legacy stars like Prince or Michael Jackson in the 1970s and 1980s, he noted a visible reduction in creative imagination.

Will.i.am declared that artificial intelligence was not responsible for this reduction in imagination. Icons such as Prince and Jackson defined late twentieth century popular music through ambitious, multi-track album projects and intricate production that prioritized storytelling over algorithmic metrics.

Artificial intelligence as a transformative tool

Despite his sharp critique of current music industry practices, Will.i.am expressed optimism regarding the role artificial intelligence could play in the future. He suggested that by making music creation instantaneous, technology will force listeners and creators to re-evaluate what they hold sacred in art.

He said that instant generation will compel humans to value artistic creation in a different way and to keep sacred elements much closer to themselves.

Will.i.am concluded his interview by highlighting that live concert tours, theatre performances, and stand-up comedy shows remain enduring spaces of truth and genuine human interaction. He noted that artificial intelligence could ultimately serve as the catalyst that prompts musicians and audiences to focus on what truly matters in the human musical experience.
