Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has responded to the cancellation of Wonder Man‘s second season, saying the Marvel Disney+ series had made a real impact despite the news.
Disney+ confirmed it will not move forward with a second season of the show, which had previously been renewed. The cancellation was first reported by Variety.
Abdul-Mateen II, who plays Simon Williams in the series, addressed the news on social media. He said the cancellation had just been confirmed and added that everything works out in the end.
The actor went on to thank viewers for their support and said the series had succeeded in what mattered most to him. He said he could see that effect in the faces of YouTube reactors, in messages from fans who said the show reminded them not to give up, and in the genuine warmth he felt when meeting viewers in person.
Despite the cancellation, fans of the series will still be able to see its characters appear in other Marvel projects in the future, according to the report.
How Abdul-Mateen II Came to Take the Role
The actor had not initially planned to accept the part. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said a conversation with Marvel chief Kevin Feige was what changed his mind. He said he told his representatives he needed to speak directly with Feige, and when they suggested he talk to someone else instead, he told them to put Feige on the phone or he would say no.
Wonder Man, created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, follows struggling Hollywood actor Simon Williams as he gains superpowers and befriends Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley. The full first season is available on Disney+.
