Adonis Georgiadis orders probe into Giorgos Mazonakis death

Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has announced an immediate investigation into the death of popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis following an invasive medical procedure at a clinic in Athens.

According to preliminary details released by the minister, Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest during a procedure reported to be plasmapheresis. Georgiadis stated that the premises where the treatment took place held a license only for a basic internal medicine practice, making the performance of such an invasive procedure illegal at that location.

The minister emphasized that health authorities must inspect the exact conditions surrounding the incident. He explained that a forensic investigation will clarify the precise causes of death and determine whether administrative or scientific liability exists, as well as who holds responsibility.

Inspection by medical association

Georgiadis requested the President of the Athens Medical Association to conduct an immediate statutory inspection of the facility. In Greece, local medical associations hold regulatory authority over the oversight and licensing enforcement of private doctor offices. He confirmed that the formal control process has already commenced.

Plasmapheresis is a medical procedure in which blood is withdrawn from a patient, separated into plasma and blood cells, and filtered to remove antibodies or toxins before being returned to circulation. Due to potential clinical risks, healthcare guidelines require specialized equipment and monitored medical facilities rather than general consultation rooms.

Public health warning

Following the incident, Georgiadis issued a recommendation calling on citizens to protect their health. He warned patients to be careful about medical advice read on the internet and urged people not to risk their well-being under doubtful clinical conditions. He also extended his sincere condolences to the family and thousands of friends of the singer.

Mazonakis was a prominent Greek recording artist known for his decades-long career in modern pop and traditional laiko music. The Greek Ministry of Health oversees public health policy and clinical standards, while professional bodies such as the Athens Medical Association regulate medical practitioner conduct in the capital.
