Alejandro Sanz Marks 35 Years Since Debut Album Release

Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz is celebrating the 35th anniversary of his debut album Viviendo Deprisa, which was released on August 20, 1991.

The album became a massive commercial success in Spain, turning into the best-selling record of 1991 in the country. It certified seven platinum records with more than 700,000 copies sold, allowing the artist to perform his first concert at the Pabellón de Deportes del Real Madrid, a major sports arena in the Spanish capital.

Fans across social media marked the 35-year milestone by posting tributes on Instagram, several of which the singer shared on his official account.

Record label rejection and launch strategy

Before signing with Warner Music to release Viviendo Deprisa, Sanz presented the project to another record label that rejected it. Warner ultimately chose to back the young musician and executed a specific promotional strategy.

Although the full album went on sale in August 1991, the record company did not send the tracks to radio stations digitally all at once. Instead, tracks were released progressively over more than a year to keep the album at the top of the national sales charts.

Dark themes behind pop melodies

Industry critics initially categorized the project within teen pop, yet the album contained dark narratives that stood in stark contrast to its young target audience.

The track Se Le Apagó la Luz best reflected this contrast. Despite its upbeat pop melody, the lyrics detailed a real tragedy involving the death of a close friend of Sanz in a motorcycle accident. The song explicitly described the friend's moments of agony on the road and the arrival of an ambulance, delivering an unusual level of drama for an artist at the start of his career.

Concert crowd surge in Algeciras

During the summer of 1991, Sanz scheduled a free concert at the Plaza de Andalucía, a public square in the southern Spanish city of Algeciras, to introduce his new music. He did not anticipate the overwhelming crowd that arrived for the performance.

Before the situation fully overflowed, the singer's team realized control was slipping as thousands of attendees pushed toward the front row. The pressure caused the security fencing to buckle and slide along the ground.

The manager of Alejandro Sanz described the panic of hearing the metallic creaking of the metal barriers as the crowd surged forward to touch the singer or request autographs. Facing an immediate risk of a crowd crush, the manager approached security staff to ask whether the barriers could hold or if they needed to evacuate.

Security personnel confirmed they were unable to contain a human stampede of that magnitude. As a result, organizers suspended the concert immediately to prevent potential tragedy, marking an early demonstration of the immense public impact Sanz would command throughout his career.
