Amazon Prime Video has released the first trailer for Spanish zombie movie sequel Apocalipsis Z: Nuevo mundo, confirming an updated release date of October 30, 2026.
Amazon MGM Studios had previously announced in early July that the film would premiere on October 31, aligning with Halloween in Spain. Prior to its digital launch on Prime Video, the movie will make its public debut at the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival on October 10, 2026.
New Canary Islands setting
The official trailer shows that the sequel moves its story to the Canary Islands, an archipelago off the northwestern coast of Africa. Following the widespread outbreak of the TSJ virus, the island chain has become the final sanctuary in Europe.
Tension rises when a specialized team departs the islands and journeys back to the Spanish mainland in search of essential supplies. A survivor named Roberto joins the expedition team, carrying motives that remain questionable.
The supply run quickly transforms into a desperate struggle for survival against massive hordes of infected creatures. Facing internal mistrust and conflicting loyalties, Roberto and his team are forced to decide whether to prioritize their own individual survival or risk everything to protect what remains of human society.
Origins of the zombie outbreak
Apocalipsis Z: Nuevo mundo is the direct follow-up to the 2024 film Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin. Both feature films adapt the horror book series written by Spanish author Manel Loureiro.
The original movie depicts an apocalyptic narrative across Spain following the emergence of a global virus similar to rabies that converts people into violent, zombie-like monsters. The narrative centers on Manel, a young man mourning the loss of his wife in a fatal accident.
Acting on advice from his sister, Manel initially attempts to travel to the Canary Islands to find her. When that plan breaks down, he isolates himself inside his home in Galicia, a region in northwestern Spain, attempting to convert the house into a fortified bunker against the infected.
After his domestic defense fails, Manel is forced to abandon his home alongside his pet cat, Lúculo. Their subsequent travel across Spain brings them into contact with various unexpected companions who prove vital to surviving the ongoing collapse.
Cast changes and returning stars
The sequel brings notable roster changes to the film franchise. Francisco Ortiz, who played the lead role of Manel in the first movie, does not appear in the second installment. Iria del Río, who portrayed Julia in the 2024 film, is also absent from the continuation.
However, two principal cast members return to reprise their original roles. Berta Vázquez returns as Lucía, and José María Yazpik returns as Pritchenko.
The sequel also introduces several new cast members playing fresh characters within the series. The new additions to the ensemble include Carlos Alcaide, Mónica López, and Javier Godino.
