Australia has been named the safest place on Earth to survive a global cataclysm, according to research reported by the Daily Mail.
A team of researchers led by Dr Florian Ulrich-Essen from Hagen University in Germany conducted the study by examining hundreds of scientific papers on potential worldwide disasters.
The specialists evaluated catastrophic scenarios ranging from asteroid impacts and supervolcano eruptions to full-scale nuclear war and severe biological threats. Their comprehensive analysis aimed to identify structural conditions that allow human society to maintain continuity during extreme global shocks. Their findings were published in the scientific journal Global Challenges.
Hagen University, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is Germany's sole state-funded distance-learning institution, while Global Challenges is a peer-reviewed open-access journal covering environmental hazards, planetary health, and sustainability issues.
Key factors for surviving catastrophic events
The research team concluded that rich, democratic island nations equipped with developed industrial infrastructure and strong agricultural capacity offer the highest likelihood of human survival. The study highlighted that geographic isolation from major international conflict zones is a critical requirement for enduring large-scale disasters.
In addition to Australia, the top tier of nations identified with high prospects of surviving a catastrophic event included New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, and Argentina.
However, the researchers noted that each of those four nations possesses specific vulnerabilities compared to Australia. Australia stood out because it combines extreme geographic remoteness from active geopolitical conflict zones with massive domestic food production, robust industrial manufacturing, and abundant natural energy and mineral resources.
Australia is an island continent spanning nearly 7.7 million square kilometers in the Southern Hemisphere, surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its agricultural sector produces vast surpluses of grain, beef, and dairy products relative to its domestic population, providing self-sufficiency in food security during major international supply disruptions. The country also possesses extensive mining infrastructure for iron ore, coal, and critical minerals.

The study evaluated how different geographic and economic models perform under global stress. New Zealand is a neighboring South Pacific island nation with rich agricultural lands and renewable energy, though with a smaller industrial footprint. Japan is an East Asian archipelago with advanced manufacturing capabilities but heavy reliance on imported energy and raw materials. Switzerland is a landlocked Alpine nation in Central Europe renowned for military neutrality and extensive shelter infrastructure, while Argentina is a South American nation with vast agricultural plains in the Southern Hemisphere.
The publication of the study comes amid broader public discussion regarding catastrophic risk and doomsday preparation among global business leaders. Billionaire tech investor Peter Thiel previously predicted an imminent end of the world, stating that the antichrist is already present among humanity.
Thiel argued that attempts by governments and regulatory bodies to restrict technological innovation will only accelerate the arrival of Armageddon rather than prevent it.
