What eyeshadow not to use after 50: the opinion of makeup artists

Are you over 50 and want to enhance your look while hiding fine lines? Then, according to experts, these shadows are best put aside.

less glitter

If you want to look fresh and natural, then, according to experts, it is better to ditch glitter and metallic eyeshadows – they look amazing in a nightclub, but are completely unsuitable for everyday looks.

Metals can look “harsh” on mature skin, says celebrity makeup artist Kerrin Jackson, a four-time Emmy nominee for makeup, who’s worked on films like Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and The Hobbit.

“They’re tough on the skin, even if only lightly textured,” says Jackson. “Because of the reflective particles, these shadows end up highlighting every wrinkle and line, when you would normally spend a lot of time hiding them with makeup.”

But what can replace metallic shades?

Does this mean that after 50 years you will no longer be able to shine? Jackson advises her mature clients to switch to neutral matte shades – they, according to Kerrin, will be much more flattering. However, her colleague, celebrity hairstylist and makeup artist Meredith Boyd is sure there’s no need to forego shine altogether.

Boyd advises trying pearlescent eyeshadows — they, Meredith says, glide on easily, blend well, and don’t accentuate lines. “Mother of pearl combines the best of both worlds – matte and shimmer. The soft pearl structure gives the eyes more life and sparkle than classic powders,” explains the makeup artist.

Another alternative is shimmer cream eyeshadow, which is flexible enough for aging skin. Boyd also recommends that you always use an eye primer – it will even out the surface and thus help create the perfect “canvas” for makeup that will allow the shadows to last all day.
