What is edema

Before starting the fight against edema, it is important to understand what they really are. In fact, it is an accumulation of fluid in the intercellular space. Most often this is a problem common to the whole organism, the stagnation of fluids just manifests itself somewhere more pronounced, and somewhere – weaker.

Many people believe that edema only occurs in those who drank a lot of water the night before, ate too much salt, or overindulged in drinking alcohol. In fact, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are two types of reasons leading to the accumulation of fluid in the cells:

  1. hidden (few people know that they lead to swelling);

  2. explicit (the ones that almost everyone knows).

It is worth dwelling in more detail on the causes of edema in order to understand that they are not always harmless and may be due to malfunctions in the body, and not to our actions.

“Guilty” of water retention in cells

To hidden causes of edema include:

  • computer neck syndrome;

Modern life is impossible to imagine without a variety of gadgets: phones, tablets, laptops and others. But have you ever paid attention to the position of our neck when we go through the information of the gadget? She has to be bent over! And it is in this position that a spasm of the neck muscles occurs, hypertonicity and compression of blood and lymphatic vessels occur. This leads to stagnation of fluid and the formation of edema. It’s not for nothing that when you raise your head after a long forced semi-flexed position, you want to stretch the tired area.

  • metabolic syndrome;

It is a metabolic disorder that is manifested by the following set of symptoms: abdominal obesity, increased blood sugar, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.

  • sex hormones;

Estrogens, prolactin cause retention of sodium and fluid in the intercellular space. Progesterone deficiency also leads to fluid buildup.

  • diseases of the endocrine system (hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus);
  • kidney diseases, cardiovascular system;
  • Incorrectly chosen cosmetic procedures.

If hidden causes are associated with disturbances in the functioning of the organism, then explicit depends on the lifestyle a person leads:

  • the predominance of salty and spicy foods in the diet;
  • improper drinking regime (excess water is as harmful as a lack);
  • abuse of carbohydrates or protein foods;
  • stress;
  • chronic lack of sleep;
  • sedentary lifestyle;
  • poorly chosen pillow for sleeping (the head is tilted).

So what if you wake up with swelling? There are several ways to improve your face.

Use one or more tricks to fight swelling in the morning!

  • We get rid of edema with circular movements of the head

Since one of the causes of fluid accumulation is muscle hypertonicity, they need to be stretched. Movements should be smooth and unhurried, try to draw a figure eight with your head.

  • Get rid of swelling with a light self-massage

Make gentle stroking movements with your hands from head to shoulders – 5-7 times. It would be good to apply a cream before starting the massage so that the hands glide smoothly. Then do another 5-7 times, but with a little more pressure. This helps disperse lymph stagnation.

  • Get rid of swelling by jumping in place

They are also called lymphatic drainage. Helps improve lymph circulation, remove excess fluid from the body, improve microcirculation. It is best to do this on an empty stomach. You need to rise on your toes, lifting only your heels off the floor, and not high – just a few centimeters. And then go down to the end point. It is recommended to make such a “jump” per second. The duration of the exercise is 30 seconds to 1 minute.

  • Get rid of swelling with lemon water

Another way to improve metabolic processes in the body is to start the morning with a glass of water with lemon juice. We won’t talk much about this essential morning drink: you yourself probably know the benefits of lemon water. It is best to combine this technique with light sports exercises, which we have already told you about. The effect will increase!

  • We get rid of edema with the help of the “Cockroach” exercise

If you don’t want to jump at all, there is another option: lie on your back on a flat surface, raise your arms and legs, and make unhurried contraction movements, as if vibrating.

  • Get rid of puffiness by massaging the area around the eyes

It is important to remember that the area around the eyes is very delicate, so when performing self-massage you do not need to try to stretch the eyelids or stretch the skin. We make light tapping movements in the direction from the temple to the nose for 3-5 minutes.

  • Get rid of puffiness with eye patches

Remember they are different. To combat edema, it is necessary that the composition contains lymph and venotonics. We apply the patches strictly for 10-15 minutes, after which we wash off the remains. The patches keep best in the refrigerator.

  • Get rid of puffiness with an eye cream

A fairly common mistake is to apply the same cream under the eyes that we use for the face. You can not do this. Face cream is more dense, contains components designed to attract water, moisturize or nourish the skin. When applying such a remedy under the eyes, an increase in puffiness is caused.

  • We get rid of edema with contrast washing

Alternately apply towels soaked in hot and cold water to the face.

  • Get rid of swelling with fresh air

The air condition in the apartment greatly affects the health of our skin. That is why experts advise sleeping with an open window or in a cool room and be sure to air the apartment in the morning. Hot, dry air wicks moisture away from our skin and contributes to the appearance of blemishes. Including the pockets!

But, probably the most important life hack is a quick diagnosis! Make no mistake: If the above methods do not help, and swelling occurs frequently, despite correcting the obvious causes, see a doctor. Edema can be the result of various diseases. It is a kind of SOS signal from your body. You should always “keep your finger on the pulse”, at least once a year to take tests and undergo diagnostics. Listen to your body and stay healthy!
