How to Choose a Good Powder for Hair Volume: Tricky Life Hacks from a Hairstylist

Hair powder is a clearly underrated tool that can add fantastic volume to your hair. If this product is not yet part of your beauty arsenal, it’s time to finally fix it. And these valuable tips from the hairstylist will help you choose the right powder for volume.

3-4 years ago, many did not even know such a functional product as hair powder. And even now many are wary of this tool, and completely in vain. After all, a good powder can not only add volume to hair at the roots, but also highlight hair strands and even fix curls.

How to understand which powder is ideal for your hair and whether it will cope with all tasks, the expert told VOICE.

What is modeling powder?

The texture of this styling tool resembles a dry shampoo – the same powder of small crystals. The main purpose of the powder is to create texture, shape and volume of the hair at the roots. On application, the powder acts instantly, but its main advantages:

  • suitable for different hair types;
  • perfectly fixes and models the hairstyle;
  • has a handy little bottle that is easy to carry;
  • able to remove oily shine from hair, so in an emergency, the product can be used as a quick option instead of washing off.

By the way, the powder is not visible on dark strands – it is perfectly absorbed. Of the shortcomings: the powder is not suitable for owners of long thick hair. Also keep in mind that it will be quite difficult to comb the curls after applying the powder, especially if they are curly.

What are the powders

Powders are different, but in general they can be divided into three types: oily, dry and very hard. Unfortunately, this information is not written on the labels and it is extremely important. After all, we all have different hair: their structure and length are different. This must be taken into account when choosing a styling tool of this type.

dry powder

The product keeps the volume well, does not stick and does not weigh down the hair, it is able to slightly absorb their pollution. The main thing is to understand that it is not a panacea for dirty strands and to wash your hair in a timely manner.

Dry powder is suitable for Slavic hair of medium and short length, as well as for fixing curls. The product helps to lift the bangs – both short and elongated – and also holds the strands well without a weighting effect.

However, you shouldn’t overdo it with dry powder. Apply it lightly on top, imagining yourself as a fairy spraying fairy dust. Do not pour the product on your hands – it is a waste. When you turn your hands palm down, the powder spreads unnecessarily on the floor.

If you’ve gone too far with powder again, blow it out of your hair with a hair dryer, setting it to cool air mode. It is impossible to act hot, since part of the powder will be blown off, and part under the influence of heat will become greasy and pollute the hair.

Benefits of dry powder:

  • convenient small package, you can take it with you on the plane, take it to work;
  • it is easy to correct the fallen volume – it is enough to massage with clean fingers and the powder will provide the desired effect;
  • no need to apply twice: even after the cap, it works very well and gives volume.

Disadvantages of dry powder:

  • electrifies dry hair;
  • if you overdo it, it will be difficult for you to comb your hair;
  • not very suitable for dense or porous short hair, as well as very dry, long and thick curls.

oily powder

The product holds volume well, highlights the strands and shapes the hairstyle. This powder is suitable for thick, short and dense hair. The application scheme is absolutely identical to the first option. However, the tool is not suitable for holding and lifting long or elongated mops. Also, you should not use it on thin Slavic hair (only if it is not an ultra-short haircut) and on strands of medium length.

Benefits of oily powder:

  • long-term fixation;
  • does not require sleep during the day;
  • after the cap, it again forms strands and increases the volume.

Disadvantages of greasy powder:

  • the hat will need to be washed more often due to powder residue;
  • if you overdo it with the remedy, you will have to wash your head – a hair dryer will not help you here.

very hard powder

Strongly fixes the haircut – after applying such a powder it will be difficult even to insert a hand into the hair. If you encounter such a powder, you can seal the holes, leaving only one, and gently apply the product to your hair. The fixation will be good, and the hair can at least be touched. Otherwise, in ordinary life, it is better not to use it if you are not a fan of a “helmet” on your head.

How to check what type of powder is in front of you?

Despite the fact that manufacturers do not write the type of powder on the label, you can find out about it empirically. You need to pour a small amount of product into the palm of your hand and rub it in with your finger. If the powder begins to “melt” or roll into lumps, it’s a greasy powder; if it disappears and does not leave a greasy trace, it is that it is dry.

Now there are products with a dispenser for point application to the roots – this is a wonderful device. But so far, among the options available with such a dispenser, there are only greasy powders that are not suitable for fine Slavic hair.

What to look for when using powder

If you have fine, dry hair, it is not recommended to apply the product to the full length. To add volume, work with the roots. Be sure to follow the dosage of the product carefully, because with an excess, the locks will be very difficult to style and the hair will seem stuck.

Don’t replace washing your hair with the frequent use of powder. This can negatively affect the scalp, as frequent use dries it out. Apply to clean, washed hair.

All powders start working after massage. Therefore, if the hair has fallen out, simply massage your head with clean fingers, lifting the roots.
