Actress Carey Mulligan and singer Marcus Mumford have raised £5.78million for the Children In Conflict charity at their annual benefit on Sunday night at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2012, hosted the star-studded event in California and revealed the total amount raised at the end of the night.

Carey Mulligan, 41, drew gasps from the audience as she announced the figure. She said: "This is more money than we have ever raised before."

Marcus Mumford, 39, added: "This money will help us bring support to over one million children in war zones. We are so grateful to the L.A. community."

Children In Conflict is a non-profit organisation that aims to protect, educate and provide vital mental health support to children living in war zones and high-conflict areas globally.

Comedian and actor Jack Whitehall served as master of ceremonies for the special evening, which featured actresses Emma Watson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Courteney Cox and Kristen Bell on the guest list.

Kristen Bell was joined at the benefit by her husband, actor and comedian Dax Shepard. The star-studded guest list also included David Chang, Lee Sung Jin, Sarah Polley, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Simon Kinberg, Cleo Wade, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Kathleen Kennedy.

During the event, Mumford took to the stage to perform with Mumford & Sons. The evening also featured live musical performances from Brandi Carlile, Sierra Ferrell and Jensen McRae.

Hollywood stars Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis also contributed to the charity benefit, performing readings on stage for the audience.

The benefit was held at the historic El Rey Theatre, an iconic art deco music venue on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles that frequently hosts concerts and community events.

Expanding charity work to the West Coast

Sunday's spectacle marked the first time Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford have held a Children In Conflict event in Los Angeles, having previously hosted fundraising benefits in London and New York.

Rob Williams, chief executive of Children In Conflict, praised the reception from the local community following the record-breaking evening.

Williams said: "Our work and the children we work with seem to have captured the hearts of a new community of support in Los Angeles."

He added: "We are so delighted to have the chance to reach more children than ever before. We will be running more events in Los Angeles next year and would love more people to get involved."

Royal honour and family life

The milestone event comes after Mulligan was supported by her husband earlier this summer when she was awarded a CBE by King Charles at Windsor Castle, the historic royal residence in Berkshire.

The BAFTA-winning actress described feeling "extraordinary" after being made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama.

She posed proudly with her honour at Windsor Castle dressed in a cream boucle jacket and oversized black trousers alongside Mumford.

Mulligan and Mumford have three children together: eight-year-old Evelyn, five-year-old Wilfred, and a third child born in September 2023, whose name has not been made public.
