New details of the lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have surfaced every day since the 6,000 pages of documents filled out for the trial hit the U.S. press earlier this week. The big news this Wednesday (3/8) was the transcripts of the testimony of actress Ellen Barkin (“Animal Kingdom”), who testified against Depp, talking about her troubled relationship.
Barkin gave video testimony at the trial, which was ignored by much of the press at the time. His statements about the time he dated Depp corroborated the claims made by Heard.
Now that the trial is over and Heard has been convicted of slandering Depp by suggesting she survived domestic violence – in an editorial written for the Washington Post in 2018 – Barkin’s remarks have finally drawn attention.
The actress starred in the film “Fear and Delirium” (1998) with Johnny Depp, at the time they were having an affair.
She said the first time they had sex, the actor gave her metaqualone, a sedative with hypnotic abilities, from the Quaalude brand.
According to Barkin, Johnny Depp was “incredibly charming” but surrounded by a world of violence “like most bullies”.
During the several months they were together, “he was drunk most of the time,” she said. Also, he said his ex-boyfriend despised people he thought were inferior to him and was always aggressive. “He is outrageous, he is verbally abusive and these things can be seen,” shot the actress.
In his testimony, Barkin further described the actor as “a jealous and bossy man who always asked me, ‘Where are you going? Who are you going with? What did you do last night?'”.
“Once he got really angry that I had a scratch on my back and insisted that I had sex with someone other than him,” the actress said.
To conclude, Barkin recounted an incident while filming “Fear and Loathing” in Las Vegas, in which Depp threw a bottle of wine at him across the hotel room they were staying in. “I don’t know why he threw the bottle, even though Depp had a fight with friends or his assistant,” he said.
The bottle almost hit her and it was the last straw for her to end the relationship.
It is worth noting that none of these claims are new. Ellen Barkin recounted all this during the trial and her testimony was broadcast live on the American pay channel Court TV. However, the details were only released as news Wednesday and presented in the press as important revelations.
Which just shows how the most media trial of the century got bad press coverage.
