Controversial Danish director Lars von Trier (“Nymphomaniac”) has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The information was released by von Trier’s company, Zentropa, in an official statement.
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic disease that causes a decrease in dopamine in the body, which compromises the central nervous system. Common symptoms of the disease include tremors in the arms, decreased speed of reflexes, muscle pain and mental confusion.
Despite the diagnosis, the director must continue to work on post-production for the revival of the series “The Kingdom”, which began in the 1990s. However, his public appearances are expected to diminish.
The premiere of the new season of “The Kingdom”, entitled “The Kingdom Exodus”, will take place during the Venice Film Festival. But it is not known whether von Trier will attend the event.
Lars von Trier once stayed away from public events, but for another reason. In 2011, he sparked controversy at the Cannes Film Festival by making ambiguous statements about Nazism: he claimed to be able to understand Hitler. This led to him being banned from the festival until the year 2018, when he was invited to return for the release of “The House That Jack Built”.
He was also accused of sexual abuse by singer Björk during the filming of “Dancing in the Dark” (2001), and investigated by Danish police in 2017 after reporting a toxic environment in Zentropa.
