Several artists used social networks and the press to express their sadness this Tuesday afternoon (11/22) for the death of Erasmo Carlos. Generation mates and even young people who idolized him demonstrated in homage to the “tremendous” talent that Brazil has lost.
Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa, two of Erasmo Carlos’ oldest friends, open the tribute line. With Erasmo, the trio symbolized Jovem Guarda, appearing together in concerts, on the Record TV music program and in films that marked the apex of the generation that popularized rock music in Brazil.
Erasmo’s closest friend and partner for more than half a century, Roberto Carlos has published a message on his Instagram profile, together with a video with some moments of the duo to the sound of “Amigo”, a great success of the partnership, underlining that “it will live always in my heart”.
“My pain is very big, I can’t even say everything I think about this dear friend of mine, my older brother. My idol for everything, for his loyalty, his intelligence, his kindness, for everything I know him. A wonderful human being this brother of mine. It’s a privilege for me to have such a friend, a brother for all these years. It’s hard to find words to talk about this boy: my friend Erasmo Carlos. He will always live in my heart May our God of goodness protect and bless him always. Amen, amen, amen”, says Roberto’s text.
Wanderléa, in turn, sent an emotional audio message to the press, in which he addresses his fans and also his old friend.
“I want to tell my teammates, friends, fans, who have followed us from an early age. You can imagine what I’m feeling. It’s the same you are feeling, for what Erasmo represents in our hearts, in the history of Brazilian music This talent, this poet, this loving man, this “gentle giant”. An elegant man, who leaves us a legacy of life example. He will always be very much alive in our deepest memories,” he began.
“I love Erasmus, just like you, he will always be in my prayers. I’m sure he will be received by the angels of light, today on the day of the musician, a very special day. Erasmus, may the angels of light receive with all their love, with all the reverence you deserve. Dear Erasmus, may the divine light always accompany you, may your light shine, as it shone here on earth, shine in heaven”, concluded the cantor.
Also from the same generation, Ronnie Von revealed that he felt sick when he heard the news. “I collapsed. I had just had lunch and was having coffee when the news broke. I was so scared. normal ) very big, hell. Then I started to feel bad, the house turned upside down, I felt dizzy, they took me into the room and I just stayed there,” he said.
After recovering, he made a short post on Instagram, alongside a photo from the Jovem Guarda in which he appeared with Tremendão. “My friend, wherever you are, make sure you have accomplished your mission. Always happy with life, being by your side has always been a cause for celebration and joy. Go in peace our beloved gentle giant, I will carry you in my heart forever” , he wrote.
Many others have succinctly come forward. The actor Chay Suede, who lived Erasmo Carlos in the film “Minha Fama de Mau”, manifested himself through the Stories, publishing a photo in which he appears next to the singer and another of Erasmo on guitar with the caption: “for always”. Rita Lee posted a photo hugging her friend, writing on her Instagram: “Erasmo my favorite rock’n’roller”. Gilberto Gil saved an excerpt from a recent live with the rocker. Paralamas do Sucesso posted a photo from a partnership show in 2014. And Maria Bethânia included a video of “The songs you made for me” on her Instagram, in which she sings “Now I cry alone, without having you here.”
In turn, Caetano Veloso did otherwise, giving a show of eloquence. The tropicalist has published an old video with Erasmus and a long text to express the magnificence of his friend’s career.
“Erasmo, with his immense talent, with all his great body, conveyed the feeling of purity like no other. He said sincerely that he was not afraid of death. I only knew one other person who said it like this: the guitarist Perinho Santana. There is much to celebrate in Erasmo’s life and work. Together with Roberto and Wanderléa, he formed a powerful creative machine that tuned Brazilian popular music to the spirit of the world. Without them there would be no tropicalism. Without them there would be no real life in Brazil. And Erasmus was always the purest and the freest. I have the honor of having written, since exile, “De Noite na Cama”, at his request. The other day I spoke in an interview with key figures in MPB “No, I was referring to him, perhaps because I felt he was above that acronym. But the fact is, without him and his fellow Jovem Guarda, I would not have done anything relevant that I did. Love for the person was, was, still is very important,” said Caetano.
Nando Reis reaffirmed the importance of the artist.
“Our world is falling apart. Without Erasmo nothing would have happened, there would be no “Details”, “Beyond the horizon”, “Seated on the edge”, “Cavalgada”… there would be nothing. Erasmo is part of the backbone of our songbook, master of my primer on how to compose a song. Great star of the star constellation of Brazilian music. What an admirable man we have lost,” wrote the former Titan.
Marina Lima, in turn, recalled Erasmo’s reaction to his recording of “Even if it’s me”. And she added a beautiful tribute to her legacy from him.
“In the 80s, when Fantástico was making music videos, Ed Valesko made this clip with me of ‘Memo que Seja Eu’, a song by Roberto and Erasmo that I had just recorded singing these lyrics. Ed Erasmo commented to me at time he loved this song of mine. I was super proud!!!” she said.
“The truth is that I’ve had little contact with Erasmo during my career, but both he and Roberto have always been gracious, incredible gentlemen at every meeting. And today our Tremendão is no more… I know it’s sad to leave . But when you leave a work like this, the most beautiful and eternal songs of the Brazilian popular songbook, it is to feel Gratitude. A giant is gone, but he left us a trail for the rest of our lives as a gift Bon voyage, Erasmus! And thank you very much!!!”, he added.
Marisa Monte added praise. “A colossal spirit with a kind heart. No wonder his nickname was Gentle Giant. Super dad, super grandpa, superman,” she wrote on Twitter.
“I love the descriptive narration of his compositions and the cinematic scenes that he was able to create like no other to illustrate the situations lived in the songs. I learned a lot from him and I am proud to have been his partner, accomplice and friend. Rest in peace my idol and inspiring dear friend! I love you Gentle Giant,” she added.
Frejat shared her pain. “My heart is broken by the passing of my dearest friend and companion Erasmo Carlos. He will be greatly missed for his affection, kindness, good humor and talent. Follow that path of light that has always enlightened you, dear friend!”, said the former Red Baron.
And Milton Nascimento told the story of when Erasmo Carlos saved his life.
“I’ve been lucky enough to be with Erasmo practically since my arrival in Rio. We have always honored each other, there have been so many concerts, meetings in Brazil and so many conversations. He even saved my life once, in Urca, I was going through the road and I didn’t see the car coming, Erasmo ran out and pushed me just in time, then I even joked with him that if he hadn’t been hit by a car he could have died from the force of the push “, He he said.
“Erasmo had a pure heart, I was very moved when I met him during my last season in Rio, in August, when I dedicated the show to him. He will be greatly missed. I love you, my friend!” concluded Bituca.
