Amber Heard’s lawyers are calling for a new trial against Johnny Depp

Actress Amber Heard’s lawyers have filed a request for a new trial in the defamation lawsuit against ex-husband Johnny Depp. They say the previous trial, which led to Depp’s victory, was held in the wrong state and criticized the judge’s decision to ignore evidence favorable to Heard.

The petition was filed by representatives of the actress last week. Among the evidence discarded in the trial and which would help Heard prove that he was a victim of violence are the documents signed by the doctors attesting to the practice of abuse by Depp.

“The court improperly prevented the jury from considering several separate cases in which Heard reported Depp’s abuse to a doctor,” the lawyers argue.

The actress’s team has demanded that the jury verdict be overturned dismissing Depp’s allegations or that a new trial be held.

The June verdict in Virginia state court this year sentenced Heard to $10 million in compensatory measures for defaming Depp and an additional $5 million in punitive measures. The latter amount was reduced, at the end of the reading of the sentence, by Judge Penney Azcarate. After the cap for punitive damages in the state, the value dropped to $350,000.

Additionally, Depp was also sentenced to $2 million for defaming his ex-wife through his former lawyer. As a result, the US$15 million owed by Heard was reduced to US$8.35 million.

The trial took place because Depp felt vilified by an article written by Heard in the Washington Post, in which she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence, without mentioning it. The actor said it hurt his reputation.
