Actor Dave Bautista has officially been cast to star as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's upcoming live-action television series adaptation of God of War.
The casting decision comes after actor Ryan Hurst was forced to step down from the lead role after suffering a severe injury during filming.

Rumours had circulated previously that Bautista was in talks for the role, sparking positive reaction among fans of the franchise. The actor has now formalised his contract with Prime Video to take on the starring role.
Bautista is widely recognized for his portrayal of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy series and his roles in films such as Dune and Glass Onion. Hurst is best known for his roles in television series including Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead.
Production order and filming schedule
Amazon Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the drama. Streaming executives intend to film both seasons back-to-back in an effort to shorten wait times between future release dates.
Production filming is expected to resume in one month following the contract finalisation. However, scenes previously filmed with Hurst in the role of Kratos will need to be reshot in their entirety with Bautista.
Prime Video has not yet announced an official premiere date for the series. Although industry estimates previously pointed to a potential 2027 launch, the required reshoots may delay the final release window.
Video game origin and story details
The television project adapts the 2018 video game title developed by Santa Monica Studio, the California-based development studio owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The story follows Kratos, known as the Ghost of Sparta, who has settled in the Norse realm. Following the death of his wife, Faye, Kratos and his young son embark on an epic journey across dangerous lands.
Their quest centers on fulfilling Faye's final wish: carrying her ashes to the highest peak in the realms to scatter them.
The God of War franchise originated on PlayStation consoles in 2005 and became one of Sony's flagship gaming properties before expanding into television development with Amazon MGM Studios.
