Australian actor Dean Geyer has made his debut on long-running American soap opera General Hospital as world-renowned heart surgeon Dr Tristan Roberts.
Geyer's character arrives in the fictional town of Port Charles to shake things up. In a promotional image released for the show, Geyer wears a grey checked suit over a pale blue shirt as he smiles for the camera.
While the handsome medic initially appears focused on his work, it soon becomes clear he conceals connections to his past. His arrival creates immediate tension with fellow doctor Britt Westbourne, played by Kelly Thiebaud.
The role marks another significant milestone in Geyer's Hollywood career, coming almost two decades after he first became a household name in Australia.
Character tribute and broadcast details
Geyer's character name also carries special significance for longtime fans of the soap. The name Tristan Roberts is understood to be an on-screen tribute to late Australian actor Tristan Rogers, who became one of the program's most recognisable stars through his portrayal of Robert Scorpio.
Rogers first joined General Hospital in 1980 and returned to the role several times during his lengthy association with the series. General Hospital first premiered in the United States in 1963 and remains one of the world's longest-running scripted television dramas.
However, Australian viewers hoping to watch Geyer's debut through the soap's former free-to-air home may be disappointed. Network 10 did not renew its broadcast agreement for General Hospital beyond September 2025, bringing the program's run on the network to an end.
Rise to fame on Australian Idol and Neighbours
Geyer, who was born in South Africa, first shot to fame as a contestant on the 2006 season of Australian Idol. He finished in third place behind winner Damien Leith and runner-up Jessica Mauboy.
Following his singing success, Geyer turned his attention to acting. He joined the cast of iconic Australian soap opera Neighbours in 2008, playing the role of Ty Harper for 12 months.
In 2010, Geyer made his big screen debut in the feature film Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown.
Hollywood career and Glee co-star defense
Geyer received his big US break in 2012 when he was cast as Brody Weston in the hit musical comedy drama series Glee, playing the love interest of Lea Michele's character. He also starred in Steven Spielberg's science-fiction drama series Terra Nova, with other screen credits including appearances in 9-1-1, Zoey 102 and Shades of Blue.
In 2020, Geyer came to his former co-star's defence after Lea Michele was the subject of allegations of bullying and creating a toxic work environment on the Glee set.
Geyer praised Michele at the time, stating: "Lea is still one of my favourite co-stars that I have had the pleasure of working with. She is extremely hard-working and super fun to be around."
He added: "Her work ethic is so strong it forces you to always be on top of your game, and that's something I looked forward to every day on set. I definitely learned a lot."
Speaking about joining the established cast, Geyer said: "When jumping onto a hugely successful and established show like Glee, I went into it expecting to be known as the 'new guy' for at least a month, but that wasn't the case at all. I almost immediately felt welcomed, and to be totally honest, out of everyone, Lea was the most friendly to me."
Personal life and relationships
Off screen, Geyer tied the knot with his wife Jillian in September 2017, seven years after the couple first began dating in 2010.
Geyer was previously in a high-profile relationship with The Veronicas star Lisa Origliasso. The couple began dating in 2007 and announced their engagement a year later, but split just three months after Geyer proposed.
