Cat owners on Reddit have been swapping tips on how to stop their pets from jumping onto tables, after one owner said months of spraying water and shouting had failed to work.
The owner said she has two brother cats, about six years old, who keep climbing onto her dining table. She said that whenever she catches them there she sprays water or shouts, and they jump down, but the behavior continues day and night until she goes to bed. She said this has gone on for months with nothing working, and that one recent morning she came downstairs for coffee to find one of the cats sitting calmly on the table. She said she was furious and asked whether double-sided tape, an anti-mosquito net or a bumpy mat would help, adding that the cats have a large cat tree upstairs they can climb instead.
Why cats want height
Other owners explained that the urge to climb as high as possible is instinctive in cats. They said cats naturally try to reach elevated spots so they can survey their territory and hide from predators, which matters greatly for their wellbeing. If the table is the highest point in a room, they said, cats will keep going for it.
Owners said there is no way to explain to a cat that the table is off limits, but its interest can be redirected elsewhere. One suggested looking around the house for other places cats could climb instead of the counter, even the top of the refrigerator, and said indoor-only cats need climbing spaces provided for them or they will find their own. She also recommended buying a cat house and placing it near a window so the cats can watch outside.
Scratching posts and treats
Some owners suggested placing a scratching post near the table and fixing a hanging shelf to a window. One said her cat stopped jumping onto kitchen counters once she moved the scratching post closer to them, and that giving treats near the post for the first few weeks meant her cat now almost never jumps on tables. She said wall shelves or a window-mounted cat bed can help if space is limited.
Why spraying water doesn't work
Owners said spraying water or shouting does not train an adult cat to stay off the table, because cats read it as aggression rather than a response to their own behavior. They said cats do not connect a spray bottle with doing something wrong, and at best get used to not misbehaving only when the owner is watching, or at worst become afraid of the owner even without the bottle in hand. The best approach, they said, is offering appealing alternatives while making the table itself less comfortable, such as covering it in foil.
Behaviorist's advice
An animal behaviorist who works with cats said punishment is ineffective and that using a shock mat is outright cruel. The behaviorist said punishments fail because sitting high up matters enormously to cats, who will endure scolding just to stay elevated since it is written into their genetics. Sticking a shock mat to the table, the behaviorist warned, can trigger far worse problems such as urinating or marking outside the litter box.
The behaviorist said cats as a species need high perches, and that a single cat tree upstairs is clearly not enough. The recommendation was to use a calming Feliway diffuser, train cats to come when called so they can be led off the table humanely, install wall shelves near the dining area if needed, and reward cats generously with treats for using the new spots.
