Actor Johnny Depp is in negotiations to return as Captain Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed.
Speaking to media outlet Deadline, Bruckheimer revealed that script development is currently underway for the Disney franchise. "We're talking with Johnny, we're working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done," Bruckheimer said.
The potential starring role could earn Depp more than $22.5 million. The potential comeback follows years of legal disputes with his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, which damaged his reputation and severely impacted his personal finances.
A return to the role would mark a sharp turnaround for Depp. During his high-profile courtroom proceedings, the actor swore under oath that he would never work with Disney again, claiming he would reject an offer even if it included "$300m and a million alpacas."
Depp's fortune was once reported at $900 million, but his net worth is now estimated to be closer to $149 million. The drop follows years of lavish spending alongside the financial impact of his prolonged legal battles.
Since Depp first took on the character of Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003, the five films in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise have grossed $4.5 billion at the global box office. Across those five feature films, Depp earned an estimated $300 million.
Legal Disputes and Industry Separation
Depp's relationship with major Hollywood studios fractured during his intense legal fight with Heard. In 2018, as public scrutiny mounted, Depp's talent agent Jack Whigham testified that a $22.5 million deal was set for Depp to star in the sixth Pirates film.
Whigham testified that Disney executives began stepping back from the project in late 2018. "It was trending badly in the late fall on behalf of Disney," Whigham said in court testimony. "But Jerry Bruckheimer and I were lobbying to make it happen, and so we had hope. And it became clear to me in early 2019 that it was over."
The fallout quickly spread across Hollywood. Studio Warner Bros. asked Depp to step down from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts film series.
In 2020, Depp lost a libel suit in the UK High Court against the publisher of The Sun after the newspaper described him as a "wife beater."
Depp later filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard in a US court in 2022 over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post. The US jury ruled in Depp's favor on three defamation claims.
The jury ordered Heard to pay Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages. The jury also ruled for Heard on one of her three countersuit claims, finding that a lawyer representing Depp had defamed her. Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.
Although Depp won the US trial, his public image suffered heavily amid widespread news coverage detailing allegations of domestic abuse, sexual violence, substance abuse, and excessive drinking.

The actor sold five penthouses in Los Angeles, a horse farm in Kentucky, his $14.3 million luxury yacht, and an art collection that brought in $3.6 million.
One major commercial relationship remained intact throughout the controversy. Depp maintained his partnership with French luxury fashion house Dior as the face of its Sauvage cologne.
In 2023, Depp renegotiated his endorsement contract with Dior. The new deal was reported to be worth upwards of $20 million.

Depp is now building toward a broader career comeback with two high-profile feature film roles on his upcoming schedule.
He is set to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella. The film is directed by Ti West, who previously directed horror feature films X, Pearl, and MaXXXine.
A source told the Daily Mail that Depp received an "incredible reception" from audience members at a Comic-Con event when he appeared on stage in costume. Fans in the front row dressed up as his iconic screen characters, including Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, and The Mad Hatter.
Depp transformed his appearance for the role, relying on heavy prosthetic makeup to portray the curmudgeonly Scrooge. The cast of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol includes Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen.
Depp has also secured a starring role in the upcoming action thriller Day Drinker, produced by Lionsgate and set for release in 2027. The project reunites him with long-time co-star Penelope Cruz alongside actress Madelyn Cline.
Last year, Lionsgate released a first-look promotional image of Depp in character for Day Drinker, showing the actor with silver hair, a bushy gray beard, and blue contact lenses.
In addition to his film projects, Depp has been touring across the country this week performing live music concerts with his rock band, Hollywood Vampires.
