Model Kai Schreiber towered over her mother Naomi Watts as the pair posed together at a fashion event in Italy last week.
The 17-year-old model and her Oscar-winning mother joined guests at the Gucci Store Show during the Milan Fashion Week Womenswear Spring/Summer 2027 presentations at the Allianz MiCo venue in Milan.
Watts, who stands at 5ft 5in, looked chic in a bright fuchsia suit paired with black pointy high heels. Her 5ft 11in mini-me wore a sleeveless white mini dress with sky-high silver heels and heavy eye makeup that made her look every inch a supermodel as she held a bone-colored Gucci purse.
The Oscar-winning actress, known for film roles in The Ring and King Kong, frequently joins her child during her modeling moments. At the Milan event, hosted by the Italian luxury fashion house Gucci, Schreiber and Watts also posed alongside fashion designer Donatella Versace and Italian supermodel Mariacarla Boscono.
Breakthrough Model of the Year award
The appearance in Milan comes just weeks after Schreiber received a thunderous round of applause when accepting the honor of Breakthrough Model of the Year at The Daily Front Row's Fashion Media Awards.
The ceremony took place at the Rainbow Room inside Rockefeller Center in New York City. Supported by her 57-year-old mother at the event, Schreiber admitted in a video shot by the Daily Mail that it was surreal to be celebrated for modeling so early in her fashion industry career.
During her acceptance speech, Schreiber marveled over how she had been "so graciously welcomed into this beautiful world of fashion." She added that she was "so beyond excited that I get to learn more about it every day and call it my job."
The teenage model received the biggest round of applause from the audience when she highlighted the significance of her win. She noted that she was the first "trans girl" to earn the award, causing audience members to erupt in cheers and applause.
Schreiber added during her speech, "I'm also the first transgender girl to win this award." She noted that the honor was "surreal and wouldn't be possible if it weren't for all my sisters who paved the way for me in this industry," adding, "I carry that with me into every room."
Concluding her brief speech, Schreiber expressed her gratitude to the industry. She noted, "To say the least, I've found my fashion family, and I couldn't be more happy."
Schreiber also included sweet words of thanks for her family "for their unconditional support and devotion to making me happy and making my dreams come true." On an emotional note, she added, "I'm so lucky to be supported by you."
She specifically thanked the team at the Italian couture house Valentino "for not only designing this outfit, but for being the ones that introduced me to this community and continued to believe in me."
Family life and Liev Schreiber interview
Watts shares Kai and her older brother, 19-year-old Sasha Schreiber, with her former partner, fellow actor Liev Schreiber, 58. Watts and the Ray Donovan star were in a relationship from 2005 to 2016.
Speaking in May to Variety, Liev Schreiber reflected on his initial reaction after Kai came out as transgender. He recalled, "Kai was always who Kai is. But I suppose the most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns."
The 58-year-old actor stated, "To be honest with you, it didn't feel like that big of a deal to me only because Kai had been so feminine for so long." He added, "Kai is such a fighter. It's important that she goes, 'Hey, I am trans,' and, 'Look at me,' and, 'F*** you. F*** off.'"
Liev Schreiber, who previously disputed claims that his daughter is a "nepo baby," steered clear of giving advice to parents of other transgender children. He explained that he feared he would "overstep" by treating all family situations similarly.
Co-parenting and subsequent marriages
Following their split in 2016, Liev Schreiber has maintained a positive co-parenting relationship with Watts for their two teenagers.
Speaking to Net-a-Porter in 2019, Watts discussed how she and Schreiber approach raising their children together. Watts said, "We're doing things very differently." She added, "I'm pretty proud of us, corny as that may sound."
The actress added, "We've made it our absolute priority to be good and kind to each other and we're absolutely committed to that."
Both actors have since remarried. Liev Schreiber tied the knot with Taylor Neisen in 2023. Following her split from Schreiber, Watts began a relationship with actor Billy Crudup, known for his roles in The Morning Show and Almost Famous, with whom she tied the knot in 2023.
