English actor Kit Harington has revealed he still believes a Game of Thrones sequel series centered on Jon Snow could be made, despite HBO stopping early development on the project in April 2024.
Speaking two years after the network canceled the planned follow-up, Harington confirmed that he has not given up on the idea of returning to his most famous role. He said he remains hopeful that an opportunity to portray the fantasy hero will arise in the future.
Initial work on the sequel series began in June 2022, focusing on Jon Snow following the events of the main show's finale. The narrative was designed to follow a faction of the Night's Watch as they journeyed beyond the Wall alongside the Wildlings. However, HBO executives shelved the project after failing to construct a story that did justice to the character.
Harington Reflects on Westeros Return
Harington said he still thought there was a world in which a story about Jon Snow could work, adding that he would not have begun developing the project if he did not believe that. He explained that after spending time taking on other acting roles, he felt much more comfortable returning to the character and appreciated the place Westeros occupied in his life.
Harington rose to international fame playing Jon Snow throughout the eight-season run of Game of Thrones, HBO's hit television adaptation of author George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. The character, a key defender of the realm, ended the original series traveling into the uncharted northern territories.
Future Game of Thrones Projects
While the Jon Snow project remains inactive, HBO is currently producing two other series set within Martin's fantasy universe. A continuation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to air in early 2027, while the larger fantasy drama House of the Dragon is scheduled to conclude its run in the summer of 2028.
