People with a third nipple: is there a risk of developing cancer?

The mastologist and oncological surgeon explain whether the condition increases the chances of a tumor in the breast region

Accessory breast, third breast or third nipple. There are several ways to refer to extra breast tissue that grows outside of its original location.

It can appear in the armpit, on the chest, in the abdomen, in the groin, or near the thigh. And it can also harbor breast cancer, although rarely.

As he explained Earth mastologist Wesley Andrade, the condition does not increase a woman’s chances of developing a malignant tumor, but acts as another part of the body susceptible to the disease.

“For example, a patient we treated recently had an accessory breast in the pelvic and inguinal region, so she ended up developing cancer in that region. Breast cancer in the lower abdomen,” emphasized the doctor, a full member of the Brazilian Society of Mastology. (SBM), oncological surgeon and doctor in Oncology, in a previous interview with the portal.

Despite this, removal is usually not recommended as a preventative measure. In the new contact with Terra, Andrade explains the reasons.

“The indication to be removed [o tecido mamário extra] with the aim of reducing the risk of cancer has a low impact, since in the presence of the patient’s normal breast, the lifetime risk is much greater if she has [o tumor] in this bosom.”

According to the specialist, preventive surgery is recommended only when the patient feels pain in that area, suffers from functional problems, in phases such as breastfeeding or for aesthetic disorders.
