Confession: “Receiving the news of cerebral palsy was a challenge”

On National Children with Disabilities Day, read an emotional and encouraging statement about atypical motherhood

Laura Dionísio Lopes was 41 when she and Ronan, 54, found out that Inácio was coming to keep Fidel company, who would be promoted to big brother. Everything went well until the birth, which occurred prematurely without a defined cause, at the 36th week. The little one then spent 57 days in neonatal intensive care, where he was intubated, but he had oxygen restriction in his brain, which is believed to have led to cerebral palsy. Today, with almost ten years of life, Inácio undergoes various therapies and continues to evolve.

To strengthen the National Day of Children with Disabilities (December 9), Laura shared with BEBÊ an emotional exclusive testimony about this long journey. Read later!

“My name is Laura Dionísio Lopes, I am 50 years old and I am a teacher. Inácio’s pregnancy was apparently normal. We discovered it two months into the pregnancy, I was 41 years old and worked in two schools. We already had Fidel, our first child e Knowing that Inácio was coming was a surprise, but he was always very loved.

I kept my prenatal care and periodic exams up to date, my gestational diabetes was controlled with diet alone, no need for medications. While, Inácio was born prematurely on January 13, 2014, at 36 weeks. We don’t know why this happened, because until then everything was normal. Due to her prematurity, she spent 57 days in the neonatal intensive care unit. At that time Fidel was six years old.

Diagnosis of cerebral palsy

When Inácio was between 8 and 9 months old, I noticed that he was dragging himself, that he had no movement in his legs. So, we looked for SUS medical professionals, and after a long walk, there was an informal referral to a pediatric orthopedist in a private clinic. He was the one who showed us the neuropediatrician who diagnosed the paralysis – believes that this is due to the lack of oxygen in the brain in the first days of life, when he was intubated.

Receiving the news of cerebral palsy was challenging, but it wasn’t difficult to accept because we had already experienced many other difficult situations. As a mother, I saw it as another step forward and I knew it, If God had given Ignazio to me as a gift, then He would have allowed me to take care of him.

Due to paralysis he has partial loss of movement in the lower limbs, small spasms in the hands, imbalance in standing and standing, imbalance in sitting position, loss of spinal muscles and muscle shortening in the lower limbs.

But since he was 10 months old, immediately after his diagnosis, Inácio does physical therapy and also started several other treatments, such as speech therapy, swimming, occupational therapy and training to accept a walker. Now he also sees a psychologist.

We see a lot of progress not only with the walker, but with the help of many hours of physical therapy, stretching, walking and other specific training by the physical therapy team. In addition to physical problems, Inácio has never had problems speaking or understanding.

Overcoming challenges

I believe that the most difficult part of atypical motherhood is the bureaucracy that we still encounter to deal with the requests that arise over time, in addition to the society’s lack of preparation to face the new and the different.

Inácio attends regular school and has the right to a support teacher due to ICD 80 (code for specific disorders of speech and language development, according to the International Classification of Diseases). But currently, it is functional and very independenttherefore he regularly accompanies the other children.

I think love, affection and acceptance are essential for his development, in the sense that paralysis is just a detail of our life. In addition to interacting with other children and adults, this makes a difference in the life of a developing human being, especially when it comes to a child.

If I could leave a message to mothers and fathers, it is that it doesn’t matter how children come to us. Being God’s plan, He will allow us to seek, through science, opportunities and orientations to lead them to the life of full citizens”.
