Words and phrases that everyone constantly gets wrong: the poet’s opinion

They like to scare foreigners with the complexity of the “great and mighty” Russian language and, I must say, not without reason. Even native speakers break the rules and get confused in the seemingly simplest words – those that we say every day, without even suspecting that they are illiterate.

People who correct mistakes are condescendingly referred to as “tampers,” while these people often refer to themselves as “grammar Nazis.” Poet and blogger Dmitri Kravchenko was not afraid to “strangle” things a little and compiled a list of the most common mistakes that make philologists faint.

In March

Of course, you have often met people who like to clarify everything. Not only March, but also other months for these people of course also require explanation. They also meet “at four in the afternoon” and invite you to “dinner in the evening.” This is a mistake: March is already a “month”, and dinner means evening meal.

At the arrival

In fact “on arrival”. “On arrival” should also be replaced by “upon arrival” – do not hesitate to correct those who arrive or are illiterate, and if a dispute arises, appeal to the cases of the Russian language for l ‘help. To be honest, this is not an obvious, not obvious mistake, so you can be lenient with those who make it.

Five hundred

Those who have not learned to masterfully decline numbers can be understood – even experienced TV and radio presenters are not always able to deal with complex numbers and cannot without hesitation “express them without 999,987 errors.” But even with simple endings – “cent”/“hundred” – one in two speakers makes mistakes. It’s important to remember that there is no “three hundred” or “five hundred.” Only “three hundred”, “five hundred” and so on are correct.

I miss you

Correctly missing “you”, “you” and “you” in general. The habit of speaking “for” and the norm of language are two different things. So let’s fix it!

Send it!

This may sound like an offer to send a courier for a package, an order to send a messenger to a neighboring state, or a request to start talking vulgarities. But if you just need to go out and invite friends or colleagues with you, then you should say “let’s go”, “let’s go” or “let’s go”. You can also use the colloquial version of “Let’s go.” Also pay attention to the verb “to go”. No “go”, “go”, and especially “go”, only “go” or, if the meaning is appropriate, “go”.

My birthday

If a wizard arrives “on your birthday” in a blue helicopter, he might give you a dictionary. Because day is masculine, and in this popular expression only the word “day” is declined, and the second part remains unchanged. This means that the possessive pronoun will specifically refer to “day.” So: “my birthday”, “on my birthday”, etc.

Lend me money

Few people think about the exact meaning of the expression, but “to borrow” is to “borrow”, that is, to get into debt, and not at all to “lend” you something. So it’s appropriate to say “lend me some money” or “can I borrow some money from you?” ”, but it is better to refuse “lend me money”.

Extreme

Those who like to make this mistake must be reminded that only the flesh can be extreme. And you have to say “last”. Yes, there are so-called “professionalisms” in the speech, for example among paratroopers, but there is no need to focus on them. Therefore, in a queue we ask “who is last”, not “who is last”.

They go to sleep

Both on the Internet and in life, something is constantly “lost” somewhere, and philologists want to scream in pain when they hear or read it. Remember that it is correct to “drop” (what to do?) and “put down” (what to do?).

Of course, there are many more common mistakes and you may not notice some of them. Try to be sympathetic to those who point out shortcomings – in fact, “stuffies” do this not to establish themselves, but simply automatically or to rid the Russian language of unnecessary changes.
