Library at home: build one for the little ones with these tips

Encouraging reading from childhood is very important and one of the ways to do this is to create a small library at home.

A Reading is extremely important for children. This activity increases concentration, develops creativity, expands vocabulary, helps you learn to write, among other benefits. However, it is not worth waiting for the little ones to decide to have fun reading on their own: parents must encourage this.

There are a few ways to encourage them. Parents can read to children, be an example and even create a small library at home with works for children. This last option is very interesting because the little ones can receive the books they want whenever they want.

According to Laura Vecchioli do Prado, editorial coordinator of literature and newsletters, it is nice that this library has a physical and digital part. “The biggest advantage of creating an online and offline library is to give children and young people the opportunity to have access to books in any situation and place: both at home and outside,” says the SOMOS Educação specialist.

Online reading is still a way of using screens, so present in everyday life, for something positive. However, the specialist recommends digital books only for children over two years old. “For younger children, the ideal is to purchase physical works. In this way the child will begin to understand what a book is and will feel stimulated by the different shapes and consistencies”, explains Laura.

Tips for choosing books

When choosing literary works for the home library, Laura Vecchioli explains that the important thing is variety. You choose different authors, illustrators, themes, text genres, number of pages and formats. “The wider the offer, the greater the chance that children and young people will find one or more books of interest to them,” she says.

Another criterion is to check, also on social media, the opinion of those who have already read the works. This can help you discover the ones your kids are most likely to like.

Textbooks can also fit!

The main objective of the library for the little ones is to have literature books that can make them enjoy reading. This doesn’t mean you can’t include a query section. Julio Cesar Santos, editorial director of SOMOS Educação – textbooks and peer platform, recommends choosing textbooks from different curricular components and basic education series.

“If it is possible to browse the book, it is worth checking whether the work offers discussions, group activities, reflective questions, a variety of interesting texts from newspaper articles, magazines, poems, etc.,” he suggests. Another recommendation is to check whether the authors are references in their sectors and whether the publisher has tradition, as well as observing the evaluation of the book on e-commerce sites.

According to the expert, it is still interesting to check whether the book bears any indication, through a seal or in bibliographical references, that it complies with the regulations Common National Curriculum Base (BNCC)with the Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA), with the Guidelines and legal bases on education.
