According to data from the Pet Census of the Instituto Pet Brasil (IPB), Brazil occupies third place in the world ranking of countries with the highest number of companion animals. The territory has 149.6 million companions of which 58.1 million are dogs. However, a contradiction arises, given that approximately 30% of the Brazilian population suffers from some type of allergy.
Information from the Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology (ASBAI) presents a dilemma, since part of these conditions are triggered by pets. In this scenario, how is it possible to have them at home?
Julinha Lazaretti, biologist and co-founder of Alergoshopa brand that works with the sale of hypoallergenic products in the country, says yes.
“Currently, with the necessary care and use of the correct products to prevent seizures, it is possible to create a healthy environment in which pets and their owners can coexist,” he explains.
The specialist emphasizes that, after identifying the allergy, it is essential to adapt the living space, ensuring the health of the owners and their pets. As a result, the probability of crises is reduced, which already represents significant progress.
How to identify?
Symptoms vary from person to person, but often include sneezing, itchy eyes, coughing, nasal congestion, and skin rashes. When exposed to allergens from animal dander or saliva, allergic people may experience considerable discomfort. To establish whether an allergy to animals is present it is advisable to seek the advice of an allergist.
Specific skin and blood tests may be performed to identify the presence of specific antibodies against animal allergens, helping to confirm the cause of allergic reactions.
“It is worth noting that observing symptom patterns can provide important clues. For example, the condition may worsen in environments where pets are present and improve when the person is away from them. Keeping a diary of symptoms and daily activities can help in the identification process,” explains Julinha.
What is the recommended treatment?
The professional reveals that, given this increasingly important panorama in Brazil, the health and wellness market is looking for alternative solutions. Alergoshop, for example, has created a kit directly related to this need.
“The Alerpet kit is a response to this great request. The ADF Pet solution has acaricidal, fungicidal and bactericidal action, and is used to sanitize environments and surfaces where animals and humans come into contact. The sanitizing lotion is deposited on a cloth and applied to the animal’s fur, protecting it from flaking and eliminating allergens present in the fur”, explains André Sobanski, CEO of the company.
In addition to the use of products suitable for prevention, Julinha emphasizes that there are other precautions to take. Keeping specific areas of the home, such as bedrooms or living rooms, free of pets is one example, as it provides areas of refuge for people with allergies. Carrying out frequent cleaning, including vacuuming carpets and furniture, is essential to reduce the presence of animal hair in the environment.
The professional indicates that investing in air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters can help remove allergens from the air, while bathing pets regularly helps reduce hair loss. Regular doctor visits are also recommended to monitor symptoms and adjust the treatment plan as needed, which may include the use of medications, such as antihistamines, to control allergy symptoms.
By adopting these practices, you can create a more supportive environment for people prone to pet allergies, allowing them to enjoy the company of their pets with less impact on allergic conditions.
