Find out how to ensure the safety of your hair and your health with simple steps
Dying your hair at home can be an interesting option for those looking for savings, convenience or simply prefer the comfort of their own home. However, it is important to keep in mind that some precautions are essential to guarantee the safety and health of your hair.
To help you, we have come up with 7 tips for dyeing your hair safely at home. Look down!
1. Care before dyeing your hair
When choosing color, look at references in magazines and Internet videos and see if you need to mix the tones. “The ideal is to carry out the sensitivity test 24 hours before applying the colour, to identify any type of reaction to the product in advance”, recommends the hair salon AND make up artist Tahayane Saint Anna.
2. Prepare your hair
Follow a hydration routine capillary at least a week before applying the dye and do not wash your hair before dyeing it, as this may remove the natural protective oils that help protect the scalp from the dye.
3. Get all the necessary tools
Once you’ve chosen your desired color, review all the steps in the instructions on the dye label and gather all the necessary items, such as dye mixing jars, gloves, hair separators, brushes and combs.
4. Protect your skin and clothing
Use a cloak or old clothes to protect your clothes and apply a little of moisturizing cream around the hairline to avoid possible accidental stains.

5. Applying paint
Separate your hair into sections and start applying the dye starting from the roots. Then apply a second layer to cover the rest hair, starting from the top and going towards the back of the neck. Ensure even distribution of the paint using a brush or applicator.
6. Pay attention to the moment you dye your hair
Leave the paint to act for the time recommended on the product packaging. It is important not to exceed the indicated time, as leaving the product on for longer can cause hair damage and scalp irritation.
According to dermatologist Gustavo Martins, each tincture has its own specifications regarding the application time and method of use. Therefore, be sure to strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions to get the most satisfactory results and avoid damaging your hair.
7. Longer color retention
The ideal is not to wash dyed hair every day, because color a little gets lost with every wash. “This will depend on the amount of sebum produced, i.e. some people need to wash within three days, others can go up to a week without washing after coloring. This allows the color to set better, ensuring longer wear and preventing the formation of sebum.” Excessive washing can damage newly colored hair,” adds the doctor.
