Remember the case

Costa was shot after Paulo Sérgio suspected he was being followed by police officers and tried to hand the gun to a passenger on a boarding platform at the Novo Rio bus station in the center.

At the sight of the gun Costa got scared and ran away. The criminal then shot him three times, seriously wounding him. Another passenger, who was nearby, was also injured by bullet fragments.

Then Paulo handed over the 16 passengers who had already boarded the bus. The vehicle was from the Viação Sampaio company and was headed to Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. Among the hostages were a child, six elderly people and nine adults. The company had sold 43 tickets, but not everyone was on the bus when the hijacking began.

The bus terminal was completely emptied for negotiations between the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE), the Prime Minister’s elite troop, with the kidnapper, who later surrendered. No one else, other than the two men initially shot, was injured.

“He (Paulo) said he was an organizer of drug trafficking in Muzema (a favela in Itanhangá, a neighborhood in the western area of Rio) and on Sunday he went to Rocinha (in the southern area of Rio) to pay off the debts he had had in some bars”, said at the time of the incident the delegate Mário Andrade, head of the Fourth Police Station and responsible for investigating the case.

The bus is hijacked at the Rio bus station and the passengers are held hostage

“He said he had a disagreement with a local drug dealer and this guy shot him, but missed. He also shot and missed. The drug dealer survived and was afraid of being caught,” continued the chief of police. Frightened, the criminal would have chosen not to return home. He stayed in hotels in the center of Rio and on the 12th he decided to escape to Juiz de Fora.

“He went to the bus station, bought the ticket in cash and thought he was arousing suspicion when he took a wad of banknotes out of his pocket,” the police chief said. Suspecting that he was being followed by police officers, he boarded the bus, but the vehicle had a mechanical problem as it left the space and returned to platform 42. While the company’s mechanic was called, the passengers got off.

When he saw a passenger approaching, Lima thought he was a police officer and decided to hand over his weapon. He took the 9 mm pistol out of his pocket and handed it to Costa, who is not a police officer and was frightened by the scene.

According to the delegate, Lima already has two positions in the police, in Rio and Minas. He is to be charged with three crimes: attempted qualified homicide; kidnapping and false imprisonment; and possession of a restricted firearm. His involvement in trafficking, as he himself admitted, will be investigated.
