How to optimize bathroom space in a small apartment: advice from an architect

The bathroom is an important part of the home space. Here we start and end the day, spend time alone with ourselves for relaxing and caring procedures and try on new looks.

A comfortable bathroom creates a special ambiance. But is it possible to create comfort in a room with limited dimensions?

Architect Pyotr Peleshuk explains how to make a small bathroom functional, modern and aesthetic.

Fill your bathroom with light

Poorly organized lighting “steals” space and makes the bathroom less functional: at dusk you do not want to experiment with makeup, try new treatments or just look in the mirror.

To add comfort and space to your bathroom, make the lighting multidirectional and variable: replace a boring chandelier with several light sources.

As the main one, use built-in or pendant spotlights – lamps that can be rotated to different angles. And for additional options, think about wall lights, LED lighting or pendant lights.

Be sure to light the mirror area. Depending on the design, you can choose built-in mirror lighting or free-standing sconces located symmetrically on both sides of the sink.

Add glass and mirrored surfaces to your interior

Mirrors and glass in interiors are one of the designers’ favorite solutions to increase space. Just hang a large mirror above the sink and you will notice how much more spacious the bathroom has become. You can decorate an entire section of the wall with mirrors instead of tiles.

Clear glass also helps to visually increase the space. If you are willing to regularly maintain the surface, you can use a glass partition instead of a bathroom curtain and choose glass as the material for shelves and cabinets. In modern interiors, there is also a bold trend of making a glass partition that separates the bathroom from the living spaces.

Choose light shades

Small rooms are optimally designed in light colors and materials to visually increase the space. But this does not mean that you cannot use other colors: a contrasting wall or a corner decorated with noble dark shades will only emphasize the volume of the room.

Colors also help to unite the apartment space into a whole: choose accents thematically related to the color palette of other rooms. This way the “whiteness” of the bathroom will not be boring and will not conflict with the overall concept of your home.

Use or create niches

It is ideal if the bathroom layout already provides for the presence of niches, for example thanks to a ventilation duct located away from the wall. The depth of these “natural” niches is 30 to 35 centimeters. Zone the niches, arrange in each a convenient space for storing cosmetics and household chemicals – and notice how much more space there is in the room.

Make the space functional

The functionality of a small room can be improved through smart storage systems, transforming furniture and thoughtful arrangement of interior items.

An example is an extended wall for the location of niches, which we talked about a little earlier. The false wall “eats” 20 to 30 centimeters over the entire length and height of one side of the bathroom. But with a competent approach to design, you can place there not only niches for shower accessories, but also an installation for the toilet, as well as a built-in cabinet with a mirror above the sink.

This way you can use the space optimally and the false wall will not make the bathroom cramped.
