Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones shared a rare family photo with their lookalike children Dylan and Carys during a sunset holiday gathering on Friday.
The 81-year-old American actor posted the picture to Instagram while enjoying drinks with his family at an undisclosed destination.
"A nice family evening! Hope you all have a wonderful and fun weekend ahead! Lots of love! MD," Douglas wrote in the caption accompanying the photograph.
Zeta-Jones, 56, wore a radiant one-shoulder black dress for the occasion, while her 23-year-old daughter Carys opted for an elegant silk green gown featuring a lace neckline. Douglas and his 26-year-old son Dylan joined them for evening drinks as the sun went down.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones have been married since 2000. Douglas is an Academy Award-winning actor and producer known for his roles in Wall Street, Fatal Attraction, and Basic Instinct, while Welsh actress Zeta-Jones won an Oscar for Chicago and currently stars as Morticia Addams in the Netflix series Wednesday.
Stage debut in Brooklyn
The family gathering comes after Carys made her New York City theater debut in July, taking on a role in Anton Chekhov's classic 1896 play The Seagull. The production ran from June 20 to June 27 at St. Lydia's, a community venue located in Brooklyn.
A viral video capturing moments from her performance later circulated on Instagram. The clip showed the cast taking a bow for an applauding crowd before Carys signed autographs for attendees outside the venue.
A friend of Carys told the Daily Mail in May that her famous parents were "so proud" of her achievement on stage.
Carys graduated last year from Brown University, a private Ivy League research university in Providence, Rhode Island, earning a degree in film and international relations.
Speaking to People magazine about her post-college plans, Carys opened up about her decision to pursue performing arts. "I grew up doing theater, and I didn't study acting in school, but that's why I'm happy to be in such an informative arts space, so hopefully more of that," she told the outlet.
Growing up in Hollywood
In a 2018 interview with Town & Country magazine, Carys reflected on growing up with parents in the public eye. "My parents do a really good job of reality-checking me and being like, 'Look around you. The life you have is extraordinary,'" she said.
During the same interview, Zeta-Jones emphasized the importance of keeping her children grounded. "What I instilled in my kids, and I'm very, very proud of it, is manners," Zeta-Jones said. "There's nothing worse than a privileged kid without manners. I drilled it into them like boot camp."
The actress added that she maintained strict expectations during their teenage years. "The teenage years... She knows she cannot roll her eyes at me, or huff and puff around me. I never did it to my mother, and she's not doing it to me," Zeta-Jones said.
Pursuing an acting career
Zeta-Jones previously shared her thoughts on her children following in their parents' acting footsteps during an appearance on the Today show in 2021.
"Michael and I would be the first parents to say, 'You know, maybe you should think of another career,'" Zeta-Jones explained. "But we've seen how passionate they are about the craft. They know what celebritydom is. They know the good, the bad, warts and all of that."
She noted that both Carys and Dylan spent years honing their skills alongside other young performers. "But their passion is about acting as a craft and they've done every theater camp... My kids went off to summer camp every year, to theater camp with all the Broadway kids, and held their own very, very well, I have to say," she said.
Zeta-Jones explained that her children had also spoken with their father about the unique pressures of family legacy. Douglas is himself the son of legendary Golden Age Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas, who died in 2020 at the age of 103.
"One would think that there's so many open doors for people to go into the same business as their parents, but, in fact, one has to really prove themselves more, and it's hard to be compared to," Zeta-Jones said.
Despite the challenges, Zeta-Jones noted that her children are not "deterred" from following their dreams, adding she is "excited to see whatever journey they happen to go on."
