Airing last night on France 2, Rian Johnson plunges us into the heart of a thrilling investigation into the death of Harlan Thrombey, a successful thriller author who was mysteriously murdered in his home on the evening of his birthday.

But which of the nine suspects at the scene is responsible for the murder? It is this thorny question that detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, will try to answer in this episode of Cluedo.

While the spiritual successor to Hercule Poirot has been scrambling throughout the feature to figure out who the story’s big bad guy is, a very simple detail allows viewers to find the solution from the start.

As Rian Johnson revealed in an interview Vanity Fair, an element that is clearly arbitrary and independent of his will, but which – once revealed – may spoil the surprise for many “Whodunits” like this one. So I recommend you continue reading with that in mind.

“I don’t know if I should say this. Not because it’s rude or anything, but because it might burn me out for the next detective movie I write. But I’m going to say it because it’s so interesting.”– said the film director.

So if you look a little closer to Knives Out, you’ll see that the only character in the movie who never gets an iPhone working is the real culprit: namely Ransom, played by Chris Evans.
