There is an unlikely connection between Deadpool and Ripley, but only fans have noticed

Brad Pitt’s electrifying (and stealthy) appearance in the middle of the film, playing the Jean Valjean number played by Hugh Jackman in Les Misérables, or even Choco’s shirt in The Goonies…

Like almost every feature film adapted from Marvel comics, Deadpool 2 has something to please fans of easter eggs that can be exploded to discover the little hidden details in there.

In 32 minutes and 4 seconds…

In anticipation of the theatrical release of Deadpool & Wolverine (in theaters July 24th), let’s revisit a very specific element of David Leitch’s film today.

As almost every fan knows by now, there is a double cameo at 32 minutes and 4 seconds into the featurette.

During a sequence where Cable (a mutant played by Josh Brolin) arrives in the style of a future Terminator and encounters two men passionately arguing about the proper use of toilet paper in the back of their pickup truck, these characters are played. Alan Tudyk (right) and Matt Damon (left).

Matt Damon is…Dicky Greenleaf!

Despite wearing heavy make-up and several prosthetics, he was quickly recognized by onlookers who did not post their discovery online. However, the actor is never written like that in the film. Indeed, the name by which his presence is referred to in the closing credits isn’t just any name, and it also makes his cameo all the more successful: it’s… Dickie Greenleaf.

A nickname that may mean absolutely nothing to some in the public, but which will surely bring back memories to anyone who has seen the talented Mr. Ripley.

In this ruthless thriller, directed by Anthony Minghella in 2000, Matt Damon played young Tom Ripley, a humble hotel clerk who manages to assume the identity of a certain Dickie Greenleaf (played by Jude Law) after killing him. The new adaptation, as a TV series, is currently available on Netflix.

Meta reference

Could Matt Damon’s performance in Deadpool 2 be the result of Tom Ripley’s new incarnation? As the Marvel license is known for its love of breaking the fourth wall and offering meta references to its fans, this is entirely possible.

We should also add that this scene is not Matt Damon’s first appearance in Marvel. Indeed, the latter already played an Asgaardian actor dressed as Loki in Thor: Ragnarok.
