Will Gwayne Hightower be Criston Cole’s opponent? This is what the “House of the Dragon” books reveal.

“House of the Dragon 2” released its third chapter, and although we saw Daemon experiencing a grim vision in Harrenhal and Rhaenyra, trying to prevent the war from starting, one detail that caught our attention was the appearance of Alicent’s brother Gwayne Hightower. Not many people knew about this character and here you will find out if he is part of the original “Fire and Blood” story or was created exclusively for the show.

Gwayne Hightower returns to ‘House of the Dragon 2’: What will his role be?

Gwayne Hightower makes an appearance at the beginning of the episode and is introduced to Sir Criston Cole by Alicent. It is explained that this knight, who previously resided in the Old City, arrives in King’s Landing to join the army headed for the Crown Lands and will accompany Sir Criston, thus joining the Green Council.

Although many would have thought that this character had never appeared in the series, it turns out that this is not the case. Gwaine appears in armor in the first chapter of “House of the Dragon” during a royal tournament organized by King Viserys I.

Strangely, the show didn’t show or mention Gwayne again until this third episode, and everything points to him becoming the face of Dance of the Dragons from here on out. On social networks, people began to wonder if the red-haired youth was invented for the TV drama. The answer is no, since it is in the book “Fire and Blood”, which tells the story of the conflict between Aegon II and Rhaenyra.

Gwayne Hightower and his participation in Dance of Dragons

In its pages it is stated that Gwayne has lived in King’s Landing with his father, mother and sister since Otto Hightower became Hand of King Jaehaerys I, so he was well aware of the drama that existed between the Targaryens. However, in the series he seems to have distanced himself from her due to not living there in the first place.

Also in the same literary work it is revealed that Gwayne Hightower was a Goldcloak and was appointed second in command of the City Watch shortly before his father, Otto, was dismissed as Hand of the King by Aegon II so that he could watch over the Commander of the Watch, Ser Luthor Largent, and let him know if there were any signs of betrayal.

In “House of the Dragon”, it is made clear that Gwayne was not part of the Kingsguard and was just a well-trained soldier who may have been called by Alicent to keep an eye on Ser Criston Cole.

The first interaction Gwayne has with the new Hand of the King shows that the two may have friction from here on out for the leadership of the army, as he seems to suspect that Criston and his sister are having a secret affair.

How does Gwayne Hightower die in the book ‘Fire and Blood’?

It is currently unknown how his death will be in the series, but in “Fire and Blood”, Gwayne Higtower loses his life trying to raise the alarm in the city when Rhaenyra takes King’s Landing and is ambushed by fellow Gold Cloaks Luthor Largent, who stabs him in the stomach as he turns out to be a follower of Daemon Targaryen and not Aegon II.
