Is Metallica afraid to play with Megadeth? Dave Mustaine asks

Musician is not opposed to new shows alongside his former band, but points out that such performances do not happen because of James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich

It’s no secret that Dave Mustaine has a relationship full of ups and downs with the metallica, a band he played in between 1981 and 1983. The musician was dismissed from his role as guitarist after a series of internal problems involving alcoholism and erratic behavior. set up the megadeth with the intention of sounding “better and heavier” than his former project and achieved worldwide fame, but he never stopped talking about his former colleagues.

It is quite true that Mustaine he has lightened the load in recent years, but the theme is still present in the interviews he gives – and from time to time he throws a few jabs at former partners. One of these situations occurred in a recent interview with the magazine Guitar World.

In this ocasion, dave was asked if there is any chance of metallica It is megadeth share the stage again. Between 2009 and 2010, the bands performed with two other groups, slayer It is Anthrax, in an initiative called Big 4 of thrash metal. Even with fan appeals for the concept to be turned into a world tour, the reunion never happened.

the leader of megadeth made it clear that he is not opposed to the idea of his current and former band sharing the stage once again. However, he took the opportunity to “poke” James Hetfield (voice and guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums) when asking if they would be “afraid” of it.

“The fact is simple: the world wants to see Megadeth and Metallica play together. And in case anyone is wondering: there’s money in that. Fans want to see Metallica and Megadeth share the stage. Does Megadeth need Metallica? No. But Metallica keep talking about their fans and not giving them what they ask for. What are they afraid of? I don’t know. It’s not me; are they.”

“Dave Mustaine is not a good guitar player”

Even during the interview, Dave Mustaine reflected on the reasons that led him to harbor negative feelings for the metallica after his resignation. The musician claims that it was not just the way he left, but later statements from his former colleagues.

“They became one of the biggest bands in the world. And here’s one of the biggest bands wasting their time trying to discredit me by saying, ‘Dave’s not a good guitar player.’ Wait a minute, what the hell did you say? I think I wrote a lot of the songs that made you guys famous so y’all should revisit that f*cking statement.”

Influence on Metallica

Even though he’s been out of the band for four decades, Mustaine believes to have influenced them in a “quite profound” way. The artist recalls that even the form of James Hetfield interacting with the public was inspired by what he did.

“For a guy who ‘couldn’t play guitar,’ I sure influenced things. In the early days, I was the only guitar player in the band and I wrote some of the songs that ended up on their first albums. We had a guy named Brad Parker whose real name was Damian Phillips. He showed up with a huge feather earring; we played a show, and that was the end of it. And that’s why we ended up having James play guitar. There was no other reason. At first, James was afraid to speak to the audience. I would look at him and say: ‘go there and talk, fuck’. But he couldn’t. So I – the guy who can’t play guitar – walked up to the microphone and started talking.”
