The album, whose title means ‘remember the dead’, is like a tribute to keyboardist Andy Fletcher, who died in 2022
OR Depeche Mode it’s always been a genre of its own: an atmosphere, a kind of timeless reverb, nostalgic, dark, bold, sometimes too dark, but always brilliant.
Depeche Mode’s fifteenth studio album, Memento mori (Columbia Records), whose title means “remember death” in Latin, it sounds like a tribute to its founding member and keyboard player Andy Fletcher, deceased in May 2022, aged 61, and an affirmation mission for the band’s music Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, now formed only by Dave Gahan and Martin Gore.
The songs range from the bizarre to the heartwarming
The 12 songs of the album Memento mori they are absolutely Depeche, they sound absolutely intoxicating, artistically evocative and sometimes bewildering, like the bizarre and soulful Caroline’s monkey. His music lovingly looks into the abyss and asks us to love him. Death always lurks on the periphery of the sound: industrial, rainy and close to grunge, which itself is also loaded with a strange sweetness.
soul with me is an amazing ballad in which Gahan’s voice changes beyond recognition. Before drowning it’s a sultry electronica track.
My cosmos is mine has a dramatic pace that works, Ghost again wraps with your bassline and People are good it has an unusual vibrato.
Depeche Mode may face their own mortality, but their power as musicians extends indefinitely.
