Former Smiths frontman Morrissey confirms he has accepted band’s reunion offer

Johnny Marr, however, declines the proposal for the meeting.

After the announcement of the return of Oasisthe fans of The Smiths bombarded the internet with requests for a band reunion. Morrisseythe group’s lead singer, revealed on his official website that both he and Johnny Marrformer guitarist of the band, received a proposal from AEG Entertainment Group for a world tour in 2025.

Morrissey confirmed that he accepted the offer, but Marr declined, as he has done consistently over the years. The singer wrote on his official website:

In June 2024, AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to Morrissey and Marr for a world tour with The Smiths throughout 2025. Morrissey said Yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer.

Morrissey will embark on a sold-out US tour in November. Marr continues to tour as a special guest with New Order.

In an interaction in the X/Twitterone user suggested that if Oasis could reunite, the The Smiths could too. Marr responded with a photo of Nigel Farage, former leader of UKIP, mocking the suggestion, see:

“If Oasis can do it, The Smiths can too (I’m delirious).”

The relationship between Johnny and Morrissey has been marked by tensions since the split The Smiths. In recent years, these differences have increased, mainly due to Morrissey’s political positions (especially on Brexit), making a reunion increasingly unlikely.

In 2019, the artist had already done something similar. Rumors that the Smiths were planning new shows circulated on X/Twitter, until Johnny ironically highlighted:

“Nigel Farage will be on guitar.”

During an interview with BBC Radio 2 in 2022, Johnny Marr stated that there was no chance of collaborating with Morrissey again. According to the NMEMarr revealed that the last time the two had a direct conversation was between 15 and 18 years ago. This contact occurred shortly after Morrissey released an open letter asking Marr to stop talking about him in interviews. That same year, the musician told The Guardian that, in the past, they did not fight about politics. However, if they were together, they would “probably” fight now.
