The singer received compensation from a tabloid that published an interview with an alleged ‘secret gay lover’
Robbie Williams recalled rumors about his sexuality in the early 2000s. In an interview with The Guardianhe said he was “irritated” by the news given by a tabloid on the matter.
In 2004, the newspaper published an interview with the alleged “secret gay lover” of Williams and suggested that the musician’s heterosexual relationships were intended to disguise “sordid homosexual encounters with strangers”.
Williams sued the outlet for defamation and won the case, receiving compensation and an apology.
The artist asked the journalist The Guardian: “Are you straight or gay.” Michael Craggthen, replied that he is gay.
“OK, I’ll ask you this: There’s a newspaper cover read by millions of people where a woman claims you performed oral sex on her near a canal. Would you, as a gay person, sue the newspaper?” he asked the reporter, who, in turn, said he would not sue the newspaper, but “would be uncomfortable because it’s not true.”
Williams he continued: “I became sadder. Not because of the accusations of being gay, because look, I’ve done everything except suck dick. Seriously, you’ve never met anyone who wanted to be gay as much as I do.”
He even made an analogy with football: “I’m a Port Vale fan and it’s as if someone said ‘well, you’re a Liverpool fan’”.
“And I said ‘no, I’m not, I’m a Port Vale fan’. When someone says you’re a Liverpool fan a hundred times, it’s like ‘I’m not a Liverpool fan, why do people think I am?!’” he added.
Later in the same interview, the singer returned to the theme: “You want to be an ally, while at the same time protecting your authenticity and your life. Plus, if I want to suck dick, I’m going to suck dick. Who’s going to stop me? My wife? The facade!”
