First edition of Ilha Chama Meu Nome expanded the DJ’s artistic universe in Recife – and celebrated the success he has been having in Europe: ‘my identity is global’
Pedro Sampaio flew high – and this time, it wasn’t even figuratively. It was with a show full of visual effects, including a flight over the crowded audience, that the artist from Rio debuted the new project of his label – the Island Call My Namea party that takes the name of the first album and won the first of three confirmed editions last Saturday (30), at Recife.
“I always wanted to have an authorial party, a party of my own, because I always wanted a space to be able to take care of everything from the entrance to everything that will happen on the stage”, Pedro told Rolling Stone Brazilwho was in Pernambuco Arena closely watching the event.

And what we saw was exactly an expansion of the universe that Sampaio has been creating since his first works. In the choice of colors, all vibrant, for the characters of his universe, everything was thought of in detail as a 360° immersion in the work of the DJ – who, according to reports, jumped headlong into the project, helping with the setting up of the scenarios before the event. .
It was on stage, however, that Sampaio showed another side – that of an artist with the breath to hold a packed house in a show lasting more than 4 hours, with lots of pyrotechnics and extended versions of his discography. Once again, each detail designed by himself and celebrated by the women of people who accompanied him from the place: “The show will be quite different from the shows I deliver in Brazil. It’s the album put out like this”.

From the audience, close to the stage, who enjoyed it was the musician’s family in the midst of an essentially young tide, which included the presenter Maisa and the influencers Vanessa Lopes and alvaro – this one, by the way, even went up on stage dressed like the infamous hallucinated pineapple that marked Pedro’s performance at the TVZgives multishow.

In addition to the party, the Island Call My Namealso celebrates Sampaio’s good phase in international streaming. At that moment, Pedro barely contained the joy of having entered the top 50 in France with the remix of ‘Dançarina’. The next day, he would head to Portugal, where success won him the top of the charts:
“I did not expect [tanto retorno internacional] like that, but I’ve come to understand more and more that my artistic identity is quite global. My creative process is very Brazilian, but my production is very global. The type of beat that happens in my songs, the people there welcome”, said the musician, straight from his island and ready to conquer the globe.

Rolling Stone Brazil: call my name, his first album, is six months old. I wanted to know how the album evolved for you. What did you not expect to happen, and what did happen?
Pedro Sampaio: I don’t expect anything! [risos] I brought my son into the world, I took care of him and he had a wonderful evolution, he even had nephews: there was the remix of ‘Dançarina’ now that it’s having a huge success, we just entered the Top 50 in France. This is funk expanding, it’s the work of a Brazilian artist expanding… And the album, I was very happy because I didn’t just deliver the songs, but I also delivered a concept, a very big load of identity, so much so that the party is happening today call my name, which has everything to do with the album. It is a 360° delivery indeed.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Before talking about the album itself I wanted to talk about it, talk about Europe. The album is a success there, with Portugal, with France – to what are you attributing this popularity, which is not something so expected for our music, here in Brazil?
Pedro Sampaio: I didn’t expect so much, but I’ve come to understand more and more that my artistic identity is quite global. My creative process is very Brazilian, but my production is very global. The kind of beat that happens in my songs, the people there welcome it. So there were a lot of songs that started to be performed abroad, mainly in Portugal. I’m going to Portugal tomorrow, the show there is amazing. It’s going to be a surreal stop like this, it’s been long awaited, I’m receiving a lot of affection from there and not only on Spotify charts, but also from the public.
Rolling Stone Brasil: And now we arrive here at this party, which is an immersion in this whole universe that you have built – I heard that you were here in person yesterday, painting things, finalizing everything. What did you imagine with all this?
Pedro Sampaio: I always wanted to have an authorial party, a party of my own, because I always wanted a space to be able to take care of everything from the entrance to everything that will happen on stage. So the Island Call My Name that’s exactly it, everything is a very immersive universe for those who are coming to watch. The show will be quite different from the shows I deliver in Brazil. It’s the album laid out like that. The whole identity of the island, the characters, besides my essence too, the joy, something very playful indeed. It’s a dream come true. Today there is the first edition here in Recife, and there will be two more this year, in São Paulo and Rio. IM so happy. looking forward to taking the stage.

Rolling Stone Brasil: What is musically different about this party today and the next ones to come?
Pedro Sampaio: The repertoire remains basically the same, but I’ve been updating and modifying some things within it. I come much more dancing, with a much bigger ballet. What we planned to bring to the show is something Brazil has never seen. Because I am an artist who is willing to innovate, I throw myself into the project. There are several clips of mine that I fly inside the video. ‘Galopa’ has a flying scene, ‘Mess’ I have a flying scene… so I’m going to fly on stage today and the crowd will be flabbergasted, I’m sure.
