Music Music of Megadeth who almost joined Metallica, former Band of Dave Mustaine

After the death of Cliff Burton in 1986, the bassist post was vague, and Lars Ulrich would have made a poll – repeated decades later

Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallic and formed the Megadethin 1983. Shortly after, in 1986, one of his bandmates would supposedly almost made the opposite way, changing the Megadeth for the Metallic.

The story is told in the newly released book The World’s State-OF-The-Art Speed Metal Band: The Megadeth Story 1983-2002from the journalist GREG DISH. The work is still unprecedented in Brazil.

The protagonist of the chair dance? David Ellefson. According to the bassist himself – today outside the group – everything happened when Lars Ulrich went to a show of Megadeth Shortly after the death of Cliff Burtonbassist from Metallicand probed Ellefson to the post.

The musician was on the rise, as was the Megadethafter the release of the album Peace Sells … but who’s buying? (1986), the second of the band led by Dave Mustaine.

Ellefson reports in the book (transcription via by Ultimate Guitar), offering a little context:

“Here’s what happened: Lars (Ulrich) came to the show at Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland (on October 10, 1986). Right when the album Peace Sells … was being released, we had five shows scheduled with the Motörheadand that was the tour of Orgasmatron (1986).

He then completes:

“Cliff had just died in that bus accident. I mean, in a matter of a few weeks earlier. Exodus Come – I remember that the Rick Hunolt It was there. The Lars came, I think with the Steffan Chirazi (Journalist of Kerrang!). And I asked him what they were going to do. You know, ‘What’s going on?’ And he made a kind of rhetorical and funny comment. He replied, ‘I don’t know. P#RRA … Do you want a job? ‘ It was that kind of thing. It was not a serious offer. “

Dave Mustaine didn’t like Metallica’s onslaught

According to David Ellefson, boss Dave Mustaine did not like “harassment” about his bassist:

“I had mentioned this to Dave (Mustaine). And I think Dave reacted like this: ‘What’s the fuck? They are trying to get my bassist out.’ Do you know what I mean?

Ellefson, however, admits that perhaps the episode is no more than a curious story about behind -the -scenes bands. According to the bassist, Lars did not really consider that he would enter the Metallic.

“But it wasn’t a serious offer or anything like that. So I think it was certainly exaggerated, just the fact that it was mentioned in the press, because it really wasn’t that kind of conversation.”

The chosen of Metallica

The chosen for the vacancy of the late cliff Burton turned out to be Jason Newstedfrom Flotsam and jetsam. He recorded the next album, … and justice for all (1988)and four other works in the 1990s before leaving in 2001. Since then, Robert Trujillo Take care of the bass in Metallic.

Another onslaught?

In an interview of 2019 to podcast The Ex-Man (via Igor Miranda website), David Ellefson revealed that he was almost called to another hearing with Metallica. The occasion occurred in 2001.

“Lars (Ulrich, Metallica drummer) contacted Dave (Mustaine) to ask for her permission, something I considered gentle on her part. Dave called me and said I would hate to get lost, but as a friend, he couldn’t stop him from such an opportunity. So he gave the blessing, but I was never called.”

Ellefson even prepared if he received the invitation. It ended up not rolling, but the bassist continues to admire Metallica.

“The first time, I played something simple from the Black Album (1991), as ‘Holier Than Thou’. It was the first time I realized that, despite the similarity between Metallica and Megadeth, the riffs… Obviously, Dave was in the band, so there is a piece of DNA (Metallica) inside the megadeth, the form that Dave phrasing vocals through riffs compared to their method… Dave was almost like Geddy Lee (Rush) In this. ”
