The singer and songwriter from Sao Paulo combines lightness and power in a work that reveals an artist in tune with the times
Sometimes a song seems to choose its own moment to be born. It was the case of Marks in the sanda song discovered by singer and songwriter Malu Azevedo 40 years after it was composed in the 1980s by her father, Flavio Afonso de André.
The song fits like a glove on the artist’s debut EP, Come with mewhich, in addition to the title track, also contains Patience AND Everything OK.
Marks in the sand is one of four tracks on the EP Come with methe singer’s debut released by the label Company. The title track comes as an invitation to do so Malu Azevedo to travel, a call to adventure, to travel the mysterious and at the same time peaceful islands of songs Patience AND Everything OKuntil reaching the aforementioned Marks in the sandwhich completes the album like a jewel found in a treasure chest.
In his youth, the artist’s father dreamed of becoming a composer and, in collaboration with a friend, created dozens of songs. Due to the conservatism of the time, however, he decided that if he was not successful 18 years oldhe would give up his musical career. He graduated in administration, then dedicated himself to advertising (he also created the album’s website) and sociology, but never abandoned music, which continues to fill his family’s days. Forty years later, the song would find its destiny in the voice of Malu and from the competent hands of a band full of expert musicians.
For Malu, the recording was an emotional time for the family
TO Malu, The recording was an emotional moment for the family: “The whole recording process, bringing my dad into the studio and seeing the transformation of the song was unforgettable.” An authentic meeting between present, past and future. And, indeed, the song sounds as good today as it must have then, blending in with the others on the EP, younger, like sisters. After all, good music is timeless and a good performer is capable of transcending time.
This song, among other things, summarizes the spirit of the first EP by Malu: a mix of musical styles already established and consolidated for decades, but which, through the unique interpretation of the singer-songwriter, acquire a new freshness, connecting with the spirit of the present and with a new generation of listeners.
And this statement is revealed through expressive numbers: the single In silence had more than 220 thousand listeners. Nice to meet you, I’m…in collaboration with Zamboniialso surpassed the mark of 200 thousand. And the company with Arturo Diniz In Go here, go there is about to strike 500 thousand reproductions.
The simplicity of the interpretation of Maluwhich update the MPB and bossa nova is a natural fit for a generation that is becoming interested in these styles again.
The softness and delicacy of his gestures, even a certain shyness, create a beautiful contrast with the artist’s powerful voice, which recalls, in form and essence, artists such as Nara Leão. Don’t be fooled: like the “bossa nova muse”, Malu is much more than these delightful songs, and also knows how to convey struggle, intensity and revolt when necessary.
