One night of lost sleep impairs brain function, doctor says

A single night without sleep can noticeably harm a person's well-being and brain performance the following day, general practitioner Alexandra Vishnyakova has warned.

Speaking to news website Lenta.ru, the doctor from the SM-Clinic medical network explained that sleep loss immediately impacts cognitive processing, mood stability, and physical health.

Vishnyakova said that missing rest primarily impairs brain function. She noted that sleep deprivation reduces attention span, weakens memory, and slows down the ability to quickly process new information.

Tasks that require focus become significantly harder to complete after a sleepless night, while individual reaction speeds can also decline as a result.

Cognitive and emotional effects

Beyond mental sharpness, lack of sleep directly alters emotional stability. Vishnyakova warned that individuals who skip a night of sleep may experience heightened irritability, increased anxiety, and emotional volatility throughout the day.

General context on sleep physiology shows that nightly rest allows the brain to clear metabolic waste, consolidate memories, and regulate neurotransmitters. When this process is interrupted, executive functions handled by the prefrontal cortex deteriorate rapidly, leading to impaired decision-making and reduced emotional control.

Physical appetite is also affected by a lack of rest. Vishnyakova explained that appetite can increase following a sleepless night, making it considerably more difficult for people to control their choice of food and manage high-calorie intake.

Medical research indicates that sleep deprivation alters the balance of key metabolic hormones, including ghrelin, which signals hunger, and leptin, which signals fullness. This hormonal shift frequently causes cravings for energy-dense meals rich in carbohydrates and fats.

Cardiovascular stress and sleep habits

The physical consequences of missing sleep extend to the circulatory system as well. Vishnyakova noted that a single instance of sleep deprivation can temporarily affect cardiovascular function.

Against a backdrop of fatigue and heightened activity within the body's stress response system, some people may experience a rapid heartbeat, headaches, or a feeling of physical tension.

SM-Clinic is one of the largest private medical organizations in Russia, operating multidisciplinary clinics that provide primary care, diagnostic services, and specialist consultations.

Prior health advice cited by Lenta.ru highlighted additional sleep-related risks, including warnings from cardiologist Aurelio Rojas regarding sleep positions.

Rojas previously warned that sleeping on one's back can be dangerous for people suffering from sleep apnea, as that posture increases the frequency of breathing interruptions during rest.

Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts throughout the night. Medical experts generally advise individuals experiencing persistent sleep disruptions or chronic fatigue to consult healthcare professionals for evaluation.
