Prince Harry has reportedly begun contacting people who personally knew Princess Diana as he considers making a television film about his mother. The information comes just days after his return to Britain and, according to royal commentator Richard Kay, the project is expected to occupy him significantly over the coming months.
Kay said Harry wants to create what he called "his own film" about Diana, and has already approached friends and others from her circle, asking them to contribute to the project.
The timing carries particular weight, since 2027 will mark 30 years since Diana's death. The Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997, at the age of 36.
New Diana film and Charles Spencer's book
At the same time, another project about Diana's life is being prepared by her brother, Charles Spencer. Diana, Princess of Wales, was married to King Charles III and is the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry.
The 9th Earl Spencer is due to release his book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, on 22 September 2026, telling his sister's life story from his own perspective. The book covers their relationship from childhood through to her final days and her death.
Its release comes roughly a year before the 30th anniversary of Diana's death, a milestone expected to bring her story back into public conversation.
Harry has long maintained a particular connection to his mother's memory and has spoken publicly on several occasions about how he experienced her death.
Harry's doubts about what happened in Paris
Prince Harry has previously expressed a different view from the official account on certain aspects of the case surrounding Diana's death.
In interviews given in 2023 around the release of his memoir, Spare, he revealed that for years he struggled to accept that his mother had died. He said he had visited Paris and asked his driver to follow the same route through the tunnel where the crash occurred, at a speed similar to the one reported for Diana's car.
Harry has also said that he and Prince William were not fully convinced by the conclusions of the investigation and had considered asking for the case to be reexamined, believing there were unanswered questions about the circumstances of the crash.
He has additionally spoken about the responsibility of the paparazzi who were chasing Diana's car that night. In one interview he referred to photographs taken at the scene of the crash and said he believed those who had been chasing her did not face the consequences he felt they deserved.
Harry and Diana's legacy
Harry's latest move comes at a time when his relationship with the British royal family remains difficult, while his mother's memory continues to form a significant part of his public image.
According to Kay, Harry is no longer limiting himself to personal references to his mother but is now seeking out people from her circle to contribute to a production of his own. The royal commentator said the move could reopen discussion about how Harry and William handle Diana's legacy.
For now, there has been no official announcement from Harry or Archewell, the production and philanthropic company he runs with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, about a specific television production.
