The Cidade do Rock venue in Rio de Janeiro opened its gates on Wednesday, September 2, for a test event ahead of the official launch of Rock in Rio 2026.
The festival begins officially on Friday, September 4, featuring new live performances, aerial acrobatics, expanded dining zones, and interactive technology experiences across seven event days.
Rock in Rio is one of the world's largest music and entertainment festivals. First staged in 1985 by Brazilian entrepreneur Roberto Medina, the event takes place at a permanent venue in the Barra da Tijuca district of western Rio de Janeiro. The site was redeveloped on grounds that also hosted events during the 2016 Olympic Games.
Cidade do Rock is designed as a massive multi-stage complex capable of accommodating hundreds of thousands of visitors per day. The venue features paved boulevards, dedicated performance arenas, and specialized entertainment zones alongside main concert stages.
Immersive light show and aerial stunts
Organisers have introduced several new productions for the 2026 edition. One of the main new additions is ECCO by LightWire, a daily production presented at the Arena de Espetáculos.
The show combines dance, light, projections, holography, technology, and sound into a 360-degree immersive experience. It features five daily sessions with a cast of more than 20 dancers wearing costumes embedded with LEDs and optical fibers.
High-tech visual displays and light theater have become central features of major international festivals. The Arena de Espetáculos provides an enclosed space designed specifically for multi-sensory theatrical performances during the festival.
Another featured show is The Flight, an aerial attraction returning to Cidade do Rock after appearing in the 2024 edition. The presentation combines synchronized acrobatic maneuvers with 756 daytime fireworks discharges each day.
Historical nostalgia at Rota 85
The festival's themed Rota 85 area returns with its own dedicated performance space named the Highway Stage. Inspired by the history of the festival and classic elements of United States Route 66, the historic highway connecting Chicago and Santa Monica, the stage hosts eight musical acts across two weekends.
During the first weekend from September 4 to September 7, the Highway Stage lineup features performances by Betta, Black Jack, Lukinhas, and Tibí. The second weekend lineup from September 11 to September 13 includes Bia Messis, Plutão Já Foi Planeta, Rapha Harley, and Drenna.
The space retains historical features honoring the original 1985 edition of Rock in Rio. Visitors can view a cinema playing footage from 1985, a classic public payphone, a white Volkswagen Passat car, a statue of founder Roberto Medina, and the iconic muddy sneaker structure recalling the rain-soaked grounds of the inaugural event.
The inaugural 1985 festival was a landmark cultural moment in South America that drew historic crowds over ten days. Heavy rains turned the original site into a sea of mud, creating an iconic memory that festival organizers commemorated with the giant sneaker monument.
App-based ride booking and brand giveaways
Popular amusement rides are returning to the site, including the Ferris wheel, zip-line, roller coaster, Mega Download, and Discovery. Access to the rides has changed this year, with visitors required to check available reservation times through the official festival mobile app.
The app reservation system relies on geolocation technology and only unlocks once a visitor is physically inside the Cidade do Rock grounds. Geofencing allows organizers to manage queue lengths by limiting digital access to guests already on site.
Commercial activity across the venue includes more than 100 brand activations. Corporate sponsors plan to distribute approximately one million promotional gifts to attendees, including mini cameras, bags, pins, fans, toiletry bags, portable speakers, and windbreaker jackets.
Expanded dining and major musical headliners
Food offerings have expanded across two main culinary areas. The Gourmet Square features eight restaurants, while the Global Village offers dining options inspired by different countries around the world.
Fashion market Babilônia Feira Hype returns for its 30th anniversary year at a new location near the New Dance Order stage. The market hosts 60 exhibitors across 20 tents throughout all seven days of the festival. Created in 1996 by entrepreneurs Robert Guimarães and Fernando Molinari, the market is a long-standing launchpad for independent Brazilian fashion design.
The official festival schedule spans seven days, taking place on September 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, and 13.
The 2026 music lineup features major international and Brazilian acts, including Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, Elton John, Maroon 5, Calvin Harris, Stray Kids, Gilberto Gil, and Ivete Sangalo.
Foo Fighters were formed in 1994 by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, while heavy metal group Avenged Sevenfold debuted in 1999 in California. British pop icon Elton John and American band Maroon 5 headline pop stages alongside Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and South Korean K-pop group Stray Kids. Brazilian music pioneers Gilberto Gil, a former culture minister, and axé superstar Ivete Sangalo round out the festival roster.
