Rosalía considers Brazilian album after Argentine tour row

Spanish singer Rosalía told a concert audience in Rio de Janeiro that she is considering recording an album inspired by bossa nova and samba.

The proposal comes during the final stretch of her global Lux Tour, following a social media controversy that recently sparked boycott threats against her concerts in Argentina.

Bossa nova proposal in Rio de Janeiro

During the second of her scheduled nights performing in Rio de Janeiro, the Catalan artist asked the crowd a series of questions to gauge their reaction to a potential new musical direction. She asked her fans if they would like her to make an album centered on bossa nova or samba in the future, and whether that was a project she ought to consider.

Rosalía also took a moment during the performance to pay tribute to legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. She stated that seeing him sing inspired her deeply and that his voice continues to move her as much as it did on the first day.

Her praise for Veloso came immediately after she performed a song by Argentine rock artist Fito Páez. The juxtaposition of honoring an Argentine classic before praising a Brazilian icon prompted questions over whether she was attempting a delicate balancing act to maintain goodwill across both nations.

Social media controversy in Argentina

The comments in Brazil arrived shortly after Rosalía managed to diffuse a major dispute with her fan base in Argentina, a country often celebrated as the land of tango icon Carlos Gardel. The tension erupted while she was touring the region after she reshared a post on social media that described players from the Argentine national football team as pearls.

The repost sparked intense anger among local supporters, leading to widespread calls online for a boycott of her upcoming tour dates in Buenos Aires. Although the movement eventually subsided without disrupting the shows, the incident created significant unease ahead of her arrival in the country.

Stage apology in Buenos Aires

Rosalía addressed the backlash directly during her first concert in Buenos Aires, delivering what fans described as a message of forgiveness following an earlier apology on her social media accounts. Speaking from the stage, she explained that she had been scrolling through her phone quickly and reposted the message without reading it carefully.

She called the oversight a major blunder and insisted to the crowd that she never intended to cause offense. She noted that people frequently share material online automatically without recognizing what they are putting into the digital sphere.

In the second half of her address, the singer expressed her deep gratitude for the Argentine public, describing them as the best audience on earth. She told the crowd that her love for Argentina remained as intact as it was on her very first visit, earning a warm reception that confirmed the affection between her and the audience was mutual.

Lux Tour setbacks and album details

The Argentine online dispute was the second major obstacle Rosalía faced during the American leg of her worldwide tour. Earlier in the itinerary, while she was in the United States preparing to start a series of dates, a severe family problem forced her to alter her schedule and apologize to her audience before resuming her concerts.

The current tour is named after her latest studio release, Lux, an album that includes the track titled La rumba del perdón. The song features guest vocals from Spanish flamenco singer Estrella Morente and Catalan vocalist Sílvia Pérez Cruz.

That track also attracted public attention after Estrella Morente voiced her discontent with the final recording, expressing dissatisfaction with how the finished collaboration turned out.
