Dane had hesitated to wake her partner when the discomfort began, but her condition quickly escalated into a medical emergency that required high-risk spinal surgery to prevent permanent paralysis.

According to an interview Dane gave to British newspaper the Mirror, she was falling asleep in Greg's bed when she first noticed an aching pain in her upper back. Feeling embarrassed to disturb him, she chose to stay quiet and endure the discomfort through the night. The Mirror is a national daily newspaper in the United Kingdom that frequently covers real life health experiences and personal human interest stories.

Over the next several hours, the pain intensified until it became unbearable and left her completely unable to move. Dane said her right arm went numb as the pain worsened, leaving her only able to curl into a fetal position before she finally woke Greg to ask for help.

Emergency Diagnosis and Surgery

Greg helped Dane seek immediate medical assistance, and she was transported to a hospital for emergency evaluation. Medical staff diagnosed her with spinal canal stenosis, a structural condition where the space inside the spinal column narrows and compresses both the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition involving the narrowing of open spaces within the spine, which encloses the spinal cord and branching nerves. As space within the vertebrae decreases, mechanical pressure on nervous tissue can disrupt motor and sensory signals, causing severe pain, numbness, and loss of movement in the limbs. While the condition can develop gradually over time, acute compression often requires surgical intervention, such as a decompression procedure, to physically relieve pressure on the nerve pathways.

Hospital doctors offered Dane emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on her spine, warning her that the procedure carried a risk of leaving her paralyzed. She agreed to proceed with the operation, which surgeons completed successfully.

Rehabilitation and Future Plans

Following the surgery, Dane required extensive rehabilitation to recover her motor functions. She has since relearned how to walk and has regained movement in her right arm, although doctors expect her condition to deteriorate over time.

Neurological rehabilitation after spinal decompression typically involves targeted physical therapy to rebuild muscle strength and retrain nerve signals between the brain and extremities. Recovery can require months of structured exercises to restore balance, coordination, and functional mobility.

Despite the medical prognosis, Dane said she remains happy and optimistic about her future. She is preparing to relocate to Cyprus alongside Greg and their children from previous relationships, adding that she felt it was fate that he entered her life when he did.

Cyprus is an island nation located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, widely recognized for its warm Mediterranean climate and status as a destination for British citizens relocating overseas.
