Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has faced strong fan backlash after announcing a special puppet episode for its fourth season.
The upcoming episode, titled Level-Five Transporter Accident, features a transporter failure aboard the USS Enterprise that transforms most of the crew into puppets while Spock attempts to regain control of the starship.
The production team announced the episode during San Diego Comic-Con in 2025, revealing that the installment was created in collaboration with the Jim Henson Company. Fans quickly voiced negative reactions across social media, arguing that turning the crew into puppets strays too far from the traditional tone of the franchise.
Puppet History in Star Trek
Despite the criticism from some viewers, puppets have played a role in the science fiction franchise since its earliest days. During the first season of the original Star Trek television series, which premiered in 1966, the crew of the Enterprise encountered an alien commander whose intimidating physical appearance was ultimately revealed to be a puppet.
Puppetry appeared again in the second season of the original series with the introduction of the Tribbles. The small, furry creatures became one of the most iconic alien species in the franchise, and the original props used on set were also puppets.
