A Tesla Model 3 owner has found a surprisingly simple way to top up an electric vehicle's battery while driving, without ever plugging into a charger, according to Supercar Blondie.

The owner said a particularly long descent from a mountain caused the battery level on his 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland Long Range RWD to rise by 8% over about 1.8 kilometers. He shared the experience on Reddit, prompting other EV owners to ask how they could achieve similar gains simply by driving downhill.

How Regenerative Braking Works

The outlet explained that the answer is regenerative braking, one of the most useful features built into modern electric vehicles. Instead of letting energy dissipate as heat through conventional brakes, the car's electric motor can run in reverse as a generator, sending electricity back into the battery as the wheels turn it during deceleration.

Reddit Users Share Their Own Results

One commenter said he drove his Model 3 to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, reaching an altitude of 4.3 kilometers, arriving with 37% charge and leaving with 48%, a gain of 11% on the way down. Another Tesla owner described a ski trip in which he left home with 30% charge, arrived at a guest house with 11%, and still had 11% left after driving back.
