Using too much floor detergent is the main reason streaks and spots remain on tiles after washing, according to cleaning experts cited by Pro TV. People often find marks on their freshly cleaned floors despite their best efforts to achieve a perfect finish, assuming they have not washed the surface thoroughly enough.
Pro TV is a television network that frequently features lifestyle and home maintenance advice for its viewers. Floor tiles, which are particularly popular in kitchens and bathrooms for their durability and water resistance, require specific care to maintain their appearance and prevent a dull finish over time.
Experts explained that when a cleaning product is not completely removed from the floor, it can leave a thin film on the surface of the tile. This layer becomes noticeable only after the floor has fully dried. When a floor is especially dirty, people are often tempted to pour additional detergent into their mop bucket, assuming it will yield a better clean.
Concentrated cleaning solutions
However, if the cleaning solution is too highly concentrated and the floor is not properly rinsed, the lingering residue forms a layer that actively attracts dirt. This can leave the tile looking matte or heavily streaked. The publication advised people to always follow the specific amount of detergent indicated on the product packaging, rather than pouring the liquid in by eye.
The equipment used can also be the source of the problem. If a mop is overly saturated or if the water in the bucket has become dirty, the cleaning process will simply smear the dirt across the tile rather than removing it. Experts recommended wringing out the mop thoroughly and changing the bucket water as soon as it becomes soiled.
Preparation is also a key step in avoiding marks. Before beginning to mop, the floor should be carefully vacuumed or swept. If loose dust and hairs are left on the floor and mix with the mop water, they can contribute to the streaks left behind.
Rinsing with diluted vinegar
For specific materials like ceramic or porcelain tiles, the experts suggested a rinsing method using a small amount of white vinegar diluted in a large quantity of clean water. Vinegar is a common household item often used for natural cleaning due to its mild acidity, which helps cut through soapy residue.
It is important that the vinegar is well diluted and never poured directly onto the floor. After cleaning the tiles with a standard floor product, the surface can be mopped a second time using the clean water and vinegar mixture. The cloth or mop head should be thoroughly wrung out before each pass over the floor.
Other household cleaning tips
In related cleaning news, the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN recently highlighted that products suitable for washing windows can cause severe damage to television screens. Consumers were warned against following advice that suggests using common household liquids like alcohol or vinegar to clean modern TV displays.
UNIAN experts also shared a method for removing dirt and yellowing from white sneakers. They advised that the footwear can be restored using a simple combination of dishwashing detergent and toothpaste.
